How to Pay NSSF Contributions via eCitizen Kenya

NSSF contributions in Kenya are now processed through the eCitizen platform, in line with the Kenya Gazette No. 16008 of 2022 and a Presidential Directive dated June 30, 2023 designating Paybill Number 222222 as the government’s single payment platform. As of that directive, all other mobile money payment platforms for NSSF were discontinued.

This guide covers both payment types — Voluntary Contribution (for self-employed and informal sector workers) and Employer Payment (for businesses remitting employee deductions) — plus the Paybill 222222 alternative if eCitizen is unavailable.

Quick answer: Log in at ecitizen.go.ke → Agencies → NSSF → choose Voluntary Contribution or Employer Payment → enter your NSSF number or UPN → validate → enter amount → pay. Alternatively, use M-Pesa Paybill 222222 with your NSSF number as the account number.

Important: Other payment channels have been discontinued

Per the Presidential Directive of June 30, 2023 and Kenya Gazette No. 16008 of 2022, all mobile money payment platforms other than Paybill 222222 and the eCitizen portal have been discontinued for NSSF contributions. Do not use old NSSF paybill numbers you may find on older websites.

Method 1 — Pay via eCitizen Portal

eCitizen is the primary and most complete channel. It supports multiple payment modes including M-Pesa, bank transfer, and debit card. You must have an active eCitizen account — register free at ecitizen.go.ke if you do not have one.

Step 1 — Access the NSSF Service on eCitizen

  1. Sign in to eCitizen

Go to ecitizen.go.ke and log in using your National ID number and password.

  2. Locate NSSF in the Agencies section

On your dashboard, find the Agencies section and click on National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to access NSSF services.

  3. Select your payment type

Choose either Voluntary Contribution or Employer Payment depending on your situation. See the separate steps for each below.

Option A
Voluntary Contribution
Option B
Employer Payment

Option A — Voluntary Contribution (self-employed, informal sector, top-ups)

Use this option if you are self-employed, a voluntary NSSF member, or making an additional top-up contribution outside of formal employment deductions.

  • Select Voluntary Contribution
  • Enter your NSSF Member Number
  • Click Validate — your name will appear to confirm the number is correct
  • Enter the Amount you wish to contribute (minimum Ksh 200 per month)
  • Click Make Payment
  • Select your preferred Payment Mode (M-Pesa, bank, card) and follow the prompts
  • Complete the transaction — NSSF receives notification immediately

Option B — Employer Payment (remitting employee deductions)

Use this option if you are an employer remitting the monthly NSSF deductions you have made from employees’ salaries. You need a Unique Payment Number (UPN) before you can complete this step — the UPN is generated from the NSSF E-Service portal.

  • First, generate a Unique Payment Number (UPN) by logging into the NSSF E-Service portal and processing your monthly payroll return
  • Return to eCitizen and select Employer Payment
  • Enter your UPN
  • Select your preferred Payment Mode and follow the instructions
  • Complete the transaction

What is a UPN? A Unique Payment Number is a one-time reference code generated for each monthly payroll submission. It ties your payment to the specific month’s payroll data so NSSF can reconcile contributions per employee. A new UPN is needed every month.

Method 2 — Pay via M-Pesa Paybill 222222

Paybill 222222 is the government’s designated single payment platform for NSSF contributions, confirmed under Kenya Gazette No. 16008 of 2022. Use this if you prefer to pay directly from M-Pesa without logging into eCitizen, or as a backup when the eCitizen portal is unavailable.

The account number format is different for voluntary members and employers. Using the wrong format means your payment will not be correctly credited to your account.

  1. Open M-Pesa on your phone

Go to the M-Pesa menu and select Lipa na M-Pesa, then Pay Bill.

  2. Enter Paybill Number

    Type 222222 and press OK.

  3. Enter Account Number

For voluntary contributions: NSSFV- followed by your full NSSF member number (including leading zeros and trailing X where applicable).

  4. Enter Amount

Type the amount you are contributing and press OK.

  5. Enter M-Pesa PIN and confirm

Enter your M-Pesa PIN and press OK to complete. NSSF receives notification immediately once payment is made.

Include all digits in your NSSF number

Your NSSF member number must be entered in full — including any leading zeros and the trailing ‘X’ character where applicable. Entering an incomplete number will cause your payment to fail or be misallocated. If unsure of your full number, check your contribution statement at selfservice.nssf.or.ke or via USSD *303#.

How to Check That Your Payment Was Received

After paying via any channel, verify your contribution was correctly recorded:

  • Log into selfservice.nssf.or.ke and view your NSSF Contributions Statement
  • Your payment should reflect within 24–48 hours of the transaction
  • If it does not appear after 48 hours, call NSSF toll-free on 0800 221 2744 or email info@nssfkenya.co.ke with your M-Pesa confirmation message

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still pay NSSF via the old NSSF paybill number?

No. Per the Presidential Directive of June 30, 2023 and Kenya Gazette No. 16008 of 2022, all other mobile money payment platforms for NSSF have been discontinued. The only approved channels are the eCitizen portal (ecitizen.go.ke), USSD *222#, and M-Pesa Paybill 222222.

What is the difference between Voluntary Contribution and Employer Payment on eCitizen?

Voluntary Contribution is for self-employed individuals, informal sector workers, and members who want to make top-up savings contributions independently. Employer Payment is for businesses remitting the monthly NSSF deductions they have made from employees’ salaries — this requires a Unique Payment Number (UPN) generated from the NSSF E-Service portal first.

Where do I get a UPN for employer payments?

A Unique Payment Number (UPN) is generated when you process your monthly payroll return on the NSSF E-Service portal at eservice.nssfkenya.co.ke. You need a new UPN every month — it is a one-time reference code tied to that month’s payroll submission.

How do I know my NSSF payment was received?

Log into selfservice.nssf.or.ke and check your NSSF Contributions Statement. Payments typically reflect within 24–48 hours. If your payment does not appear after 48 hours, contact NSSF on toll-free 0800 221 2744 or email info@nssfkenya.co.ke with your M-Pesa confirmation SMS.

What is the minimum voluntary NSSF contribution?

The minimum voluntary contribution is Ksh 200 per month. Self-employed and informal sector members can choose any amount at or above this minimum.

I don’t have an eCitizen account. Can I still pay NSSF?

Yes. Use M-Pesa Paybill 222222 directly — no eCitizen account is needed. For voluntary contributions, the account number format is NSSFV-[your NSSF member number]. For employer payments, the format is NSSFE-[your UPN].

Does my employer pay NSSF on my behalf?

Yes, if you are in formal employment. Your employer deducts your NSSF contribution from your salary and is required to match it, then remits both amounts to NSSF monthly via the Employer Payment channel. You can verify your employer is remitting correctly by checking your contributions statement at selfservice.nssf.or.ke.
