NSSF Registration Kenya: How to Register Online Step by Step
NSSF registration in Kenya is a three-phase process: you fill in your details online, print your application slip and take it to any NSSF branch, and then return online to activate your account using the PIN Key the branch gives you. This guide walks through every step — including the exact fields on the registration form, what documents you need, and what to do if you get stuck.
Registration is free. There is no fee charged by NSSF to register as a member.
The Two NSSF Portals — Which One to Use
NSSF runs two separate online platforms. It is important to know which one handles what before you start:
| Portal | What it is for | Link |
|---|---|---|
| eservice.nssfkenya.co.ke | New member registration form, existing member eCertification, account activation, recertification | Open Portal |
| selfservice.nssf.or.ke | Contribution statements, M-Pesa payments, employer self-service, guides and downloads | Open Portal |
For new member registration, you need the first portal — eservice.nssfkenya.co.ke. The second portal is for existing members managing contributions and statements.
Who Needs to Register with NSSF?
- Employees in formal employment — your employer is required by law to register you and deduct contributions from your salary
- Self-employed individuals — can register voluntarily and make contributions independently
- Informal sector workers — bodaboda riders, traders, casual workers — can join as voluntary members
- Employers — must register the business separately via the Employer Self Service before registering employees
Yes for employees — the NSSF Act requires all employers to register every employee and remit contributions monthly. For self-employed and informal sector workers, registration is voluntary but strongly encouraged as NSSF is Kenya’s primary retirement savings fund.
What You Need Before You Start
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| National ID | Your ID number, issue date — front and back will be checked at the branch |
| KRA PIN | Optional on the form but recommended — required for contribution tracking |
| Employer ID | Required if registering as an employee — get this from your HR or payroll department |
| Birth certificate details | Optional fields — number, issuing authority, date issued |
| Postal address | P.O. Box or physical address — at least Address Line 1 is required |
| Mobile number | For account communications and M-Pesa contributions later |
| Email address | Optional but useful for receiving your registration confirmation |
| Printer access | You must print the registration slip that appears after submission — you cannot proceed without it |
Phase 1 — Complete the Online Registration Form
Online form at eservice.nssfkenya.co.ke
This phase is done entirely on your computer or phone. At the end, you print your application slip.
-
Open the registration portal
Go to eservice.nssfkenya.co.ke/eApplicationMember and click Member Registration from the top menu. Do not click “Existing Member eCertification” — that is for people who already have an NSSF number.
-
Create your account credentials
Choose a username (8–12 letters or digits, no spaces) and a password (8–15 characters, must include numbers — a mix of letters, numbers and special characters makes it stronger). Enter the password a second time in the Verify Password field.
-
Fill in your personal details
Complete all fields marked with an asterisk (*). See the full field breakdown below. Fields without an asterisk are optional.
-
Enter the visual verification code
Type the characters shown in the CAPTCHA image. If the image is unclear, click Refresh to get a new one.
-
Click Save
The system checks all your entries. If any required field is wrong or missing, an error message will point you to it. Fix the errors and click Save again.
-
Print your registration slip
Once the form is accepted, your registration information appears on screen. You must print this page. NSSF will not process your application at the branch without the printed slip. Save a PDF copy as backup.
All Form Fields — Required and Optional
Fields marked * are required. All others are optional but filling them in helps NSSF maintain an accurate record.
Phase 2 — Visit an NSSF Branch
Branch visit for verification and PIN Key collection
This is the only step that requires you to appear in person. Bring your printed slip and your original ID. The branch officer will verify your details and issue you an NSSF Encoded PIN Key — a physical token you need for Phase 3.
What to bring to the branch:
- Printed registration slip from Phase 1
- Original National ID (or Passport / Alien ID)
To find the nearest NSSF branch, visit nssf.or.ke/branches for a full county-by-county branch directory.
The Encoded PIN Key issued at the branch is required to activate your online account. Without it, you cannot complete Phase 3. If you lose it, you will need to recertify your account — a separate process that also requires a branch visit.
Phase 3 — Activate Your Account Online
Online activation using your PIN Key
Return to the portal and activate your account to complete registration. After activation, you can log in, view your membership details, and manage voluntary contributions.
-
Go back to the portal
Return to eservice.nssfkenya.co.ke/eApplicationMember and click Member Activation.
-
Enter your credentials and PIN Key
Type in the Username and Password you created in Phase 1, then enter the Encoded PIN Key issued at the NSSF branch.
-
Click Activate
Your account is now active. Your NSSF membership number will be displayed — save it. You will need it for M-Pesa contributions and when checking your contribution statement.
After Registration — Making NSSF Contributions
If you are employed
Your employer deducts NSSF contributions from your salary and remits them monthly. You do not need to make separate payments. Confirm with your HR that contributions are being remitted — you can verify this on your contribution statement at selfservice.nssf.or.ke.
If you are self-employed or voluntary
Pay via M-Pesa using Paybill number 222222. Use your full NSSF membership number as the account number — include all leading zeros and the trailing ‘X’ character where applicable. A contribution guide is available for download at selfservice.nssf.or.ke.
If You Already Have an NSSF Number
If you were previously registered with NSSF but have not used the online portal before, you do not register as a new member. Instead:
- Click Existing Member eCertification at the portal — this links your existing NSSF number to an online account
- If you have forgotten your username or password, click Recover Forgotten/Lost Credentials — note that your account must have been activated previously for the password reset to work
- If you cannot remember your NSSF number at all, visit any NSSF branch with your original ID and they will retrieve it for you

Can I register for NSSF on my own?
Yes. The online registration form at eservice.nssfkenya.co.ke/eApplicationMember is open to the public. You fill in the form yourself, print the slip, and take it to any NSSF branch to collect your PIN Key, then activate your account online. Registration is free.
How much does NSSF cost to register?
NSSF registration itself is free — there is no fee charged to register as a member. What you pay is your monthly contribution after registration, not a registration fee.
What is the deadline for NSSF registration?
There is no single application deadline for individual members. However, for employees, NSSF membership is a legal requirement — your employer is required to register you from your first day of employment. Self-employed and voluntary members can register at any time.
Can I withdraw my NSSF contributions?
Yes, under specific qualifying conditions — retirement at age 60, early retirement at 50, emigration from Kenya permanently, permanent incapacity, or death (payable to a nominated beneficiary). NSSF contributions are a long-term retirement benefit and are not available for general withdrawal before these conditions are met.
What is the Employer ID and where do I find it?
The Employer ID is your company’s NSSF employer registration number. It is different from the business registration number or KRA PIN. Ask your HR or payroll department — they should have it on their NSSF remittance records. If registering as a voluntary/self-employed member, leave this field blank or select Voluntary = Yes.
What if I forget my username or password after registration?
Go to the portal and click Recover Forgotten/Lost Credentials. You must have completed account activation (Phase 3) for the password reset to work. If you have not yet activated your account, return to Member Activation and use your PIN Key.
What is Member Recertification?
Member Recertification is for members who have lost access to their account completely and cannot recover it through the normal password reset. You re-enter your registration details with a new username and password. This also requires a branch visit to get a new PIN Key.
Can I check my NSSF number online?
Yes — once your account is activated, your NSSF membership number is visible in the portal. You can also check your NSSF number via USSD by dialling *303# or on WhatsApp at 0722 153 153. See our guides: How to check your NSSF number via USSD and How to check your NSSF number on WhatsApp.
