How to Register for SHA in Kenya (2025/2026) — USSD, Online, In Person & Every Error Fixed

SHA registration Kenya — if you have typed that into Google, you already know the problem. The sha.go.ke portal loads slowly, the OTP arrives late or not at all, and nobody at the helpline picks up on the first try. Meanwhile your NHIF card stopped working in October 2024 and the clock has been ticking.

This guide covers everything — every single method to register for SHA in Kenya, every field the portal asks you to fill, and every error you are likely to hit along the way. We wrote it because the official SHA guides assume everything goes smoothly. Ours assumes it will not, and tells you what to do when that happens.

What You Need Before You Start SHA Registration

Before you touch the portal or dial *147#, get these items ready. The SHA registration process times out easily — especially the online version — and having to hunt for your documents mid-session is the number one reason people end up with incomplete registrations.

Method 1 — How to Register for SHA via USSD *147# (Easiest, No Internet Needed)

The *147# USSD code is the most reliable way to complete SHA registration Kenya when your internet is slow or you simply want to get it done from wherever you are. Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom all support it. You do not need a smartphone.

Here is exactly what you will see on your screen at each step — not just the steps, but the actual prompts and what each one means:

Dial *147# on your phone

Works on any Kenyan number — Safaricom, Airtel, or Telkom. You will see a menu screen appear within a few seconds. If nothing appears after 10 seconds, hang up and try again. Network congestion affects USSD response times especially during peak hours (8am–10am and 12pm–2pm).

Select Option 1 — Kenyan Citizen

The first menu asks your citizenship type. Select 1 for Kenyan Citizen. If you are a legal resident or foreigner, select the appropriate option — you will need your alien ID or refugee ID number instead of a National ID.

Enter your National ID number

Type your ID number exactly as it appears on your card. No spaces. The system cross-references this with the government ID database — if there is a mismatch (common with recently issued IDs), the USSD will return an error. If this happens, try the online method via Afya Yangu instead.

Accept the SHA Terms & Conditions

Select Option 1 to accept. You cannot proceed without accepting. The T&Cs are not displayed in full — they are simply acknowledged at this step.

Create your 4-digit PIN and confirm it

Choose a 4-digit PIN you will remember — you will use this to log back in via *147# in future. Avoid obvious PINs like 1234 or 0000. You will be asked to enter it twice to confirm. If the two entries do not match, the system will ask you to repeat this step.

Update your employment status

The system will prompt you to select your employment status — Formally Employed, Self-Employed, Unemployed, Student, or Retired. This determines your contribution category. If you are a boda boda rider, mama mboga, fundi, or any informal worker, select Self-Employed. This is the field most people get wrong by rushing.

Enter your civil status

Select whether you are Single, Married, Divorced, or Widowed. This is used when adding dependants — married members can add a spouse, while unmarried members add children only. Your civil status can be updated later via sha.go.ke if it changes.

Indicate if you are living with a disability

Select Yes or No. If you have a registered disability (NCPWD certificate), selecting Yes may affect your contribution classification and ensures SHA flags your profile for additional support services. This is a step most guides skip entirely.

Receive your confirmation SMS

Once all fields are complete, you will receive an SMS confirming your SHA registration is successful. The SMS will include your SHA member number. Save it. Screenshot it. Write it down. This number is what hospitals and the SHA portal use to locate your profile.

Method 2 — How to Register via Afya Yangu Portal (afyayangu.go.ke)

The Afya Yangu portal is the government’s dedicated online health profile platform. It is separate from sha.go.ke but linked to it — think of Afya Yangu as your personal health dashboard and sha.go.ke as the main SHA admin system. Most individual Kenyans find Afya Yangu easier to use.

Go to afyayangu.go.ke and click Register

Use Google Chrome or Firefox. Avoid Internet Explorer and some older versions of Samsung Internet — they have rendering issues with the portal. The Register button is at the top right of the homepage.

Enter your phone number and National ID, then confirm via OTP

Enter your phone number and ID number. An OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to your phone. You have roughly 5 minutes to enter it before it expires. If you do not receive the OTP within 2 minutes, request a new one — do not close or refresh the page while waiting. Closing the page resets the session and you have to start again.

Create your digital signature / PIN

Afya Yangu asks you to create a digital signature — this is essentially a PIN or pass-phrase that authorises actions on your account (like adding dependants or confirming claims). Take this step seriously. If you forget it later, you will need to go through an account recovery process that can take several days. Write it down somewhere safe.

Upload your National ID photo

Upload a clear JPG or PNG photo of your National ID — front and back if prompted. The image should be under 2MB and must be readable. Blurry or dark photos are rejected. If you are uploading from a phone, take the photo in good lighting against a plain background.

Add your County, Sub-county, and Ward

These fields are dropdown menus. Select your county first — the sub-county list will only load after you select a county, and the ward list after sub-county. If you select the wrong county and change it, you may need to re-select sub-county and ward again. Fill these carefully — they are used for SHA facility allocation and cannot be changed easily once submitted.

Submit and await confirmation

After submitting, your profile is created. You should receive a confirmation email and/or SMS within a few minutes. If you do not, log back in and check whether your profile shows an active status — sometimes the confirmation message is delayed but the registration has gone through successfully.

Method 3 — How to Register via sha.go.ke

sha.go.ke is the main SHA website. The registration process here is similar to Afya Yangu but goes through the SHA admin system directly. Some users find this portal more stable; others find it slower. Use whichever works for you — both end up creating the same SHA profile.

Go to sha.go.ke and select Register Individual

The homepage has separate registration options for individuals, employers, and facilities. Select Individual.

Enter your ID number, phone, email, and date of birth

Your date of birth must match exactly what is on your National ID. SHA cross-checks this with the Integrated Population Registration System. Mismatches here are a common cause of the “ID not found” error.

Create a secure password for your sha.go.ke account

Use a password you will not forget — at least 8 characters with a mix of letters and numbers. This is separate from your *147# PIN and your Afya Yangu digital signature. Keep all three in the same safe place.

Upload your National ID scan and submit

Upload a scan or clear photo of your ID and submit the form. You will receive a confirmation email from SHA once your account is verified.

Method 4 — Register In Person at a Huduma Centre or SHA Office

If online registration is consistently failing for you, or if you prefer face-to-face assistance, in-person registration is your best option. This method is also the best choice for elderly Kenyans, people without smartphones, and those whose IDs are not matching on the portal system.

Bring these items when you go:

  • Your original National ID (not a copy)
  • Your phone number that is registered to your ID
  • Know your county, sub-county, and ward in advance
  • Know your employment status (employed / self-employed / unemployed)

Huduma Centres in all major towns offer SHA registration assistance. County hospitals and sub-county offices also handle registration during working hours. Community Health Promoters (CHPs) operating in your neighbourhood can also register you — they carry tablets and do this on the spot, especially in rural areas.

The Means Test — What It Is and Who Needs to Do It

If you are self-employed or unemployed, SHA requires you to complete a means test before your monthly contribution amount is determined. This is the step that trips up most informal sector Kenyans — not because it is complicated, but because nobody explains it upfront.

The means test is a series of questions about your household income, household size, assets, and expenses. SHA uses your answers to calculate what you should pay monthly. The minimum is KES 300/month, but depending on your declared income, your amount could be higher.

Important: Answer the means test questions honestly based on your actual income. Some Kenyans have been surprised by unexpectedly high premiums after the test — this usually happens when income is overestimated during data entry. Take your time with each question. To complete the means test:

  • Dial *147# and navigate to means test, or
  • Log into afyayangu.go.ke and complete the means test form in your profile dashboard
  • Answer all household income questions accurately
  • Your monthly premium will be displayed at the end
  • Pay via M-Pesa Paybill 200222, account = your National ID number

SHA Registration Errors — and How to Fix Every One of Them

This is the section no other SHA guide has written properly. The SHA portal fails. Often. Here are the most common errors Kenyans hit during SHA registration — and exactly what to do when each one happens.

❌ Error: “ID not found” or “Details do not match”

This happens when your National ID details on the SHA/IPRS database differ from what you entered. Common causes: recently issued ID not yet in the system, double-barrelled names entered differently, or date of birth format mismatch (DD/MM/YYYY vs MM/DD/YYYY). Fix: Try the alternative portal (if sha.go.ke fails, try Afya Yangu). If both fail, go in person to a Huduma Centre with your original ID — they can manually verify you on their system.

❌ Error: OTP not received

The OTP SMS can be delayed by 2–5 minutes, especially on non-Safaricom networks. Fix: Wait at least 3 minutes before requesting a new OTP. Do not refresh or close the page while waiting — this kills the session and you must restart. If you are on Airtel or Telkom and OTP consistently fails, try registering via *147# USSD instead, which does not require OTP.

❌ Error: Page freezes or spins during submission

The sha.go.ke and Afya Yangu portals experience high traffic during business hours and often slow significantly between 9am–4pm. Fix: Try registering in the evening after 7pm or early morning before 8am. Clear your browser cache and cookies before trying again. If the page freezes mid-upload, do not keep clicking Submit — wait 30 seconds and check if the page has progressed.

❌ Error: Confirmation SMS not received after registration

Sometimes the SMS is delayed by several hours, or it gets lost if your phone was off at the time of sending. Fix: Log into sha.go.ke or Afya Yangu using your ID number and check whether your profile exists and shows a status. If your profile is there and shows active, your registration was successful — the SMS simply failed to arrive. Note your SHA number from the profile instead.

❌ Error: “Account already exists”

This means an SHA profile already exists under your National ID — either you registered before and forgot, or someone else registered using your ID (rare but happens). Fix: Go to sha.go.ke and use the “Forgot Password” option to recover your existing account. If you suspect fraud, contact SHA on 0800 720 601 immediately.

❌ Error: SHA portal is completely down

Both sha.go.ke and Afya Yangu experience scheduled and unscheduled downtime. Fix: Use *147# USSD as your backup — it runs on a separate system from the web portals and is often available when the websites are down. If *147# is also down, wait a few hours and try again. Major outages are usually resolved within 24 hours.

Is SHA registration free?

Yes — registration itself is 100% free via all channels (*147#, Afya Yangu, sha.go.ke, Huduma Centre). You pay nothing to create your SHA profile. Your monthly contributions (starting at KES 300) begin after registration and are separate from the registration process itself.

Can I register for SHA without a smartphone?

Yes. The *147# USSD method works on any phone — even a basic feature phone — as long as your SIM card is registered to your National ID. You do not need internet, a smartphone, or an email address to register via USSD.

How long does SHA registration take?

Via *147# USSD: as little as 5 minutes on a smooth run. Via Afya Yangu or sha.go.ke: 10–20 minutes depending on your internet speed and how quickly the portal responds. In person at Huduma Centre: allow 30–60 minutes including queue time.

How do I know if my SHA registration was successful?

You will receive a confirmation SMS with your SHA member number. You can also log into sha.go.ke or afyayangu.go.ke using your National ID and check whether your profile exists and shows an active status. If both show your profile, you are registered — even if the SMS was delayed or lost.

I already registered via *147# — do I also need to register on Afya Yangu?

No — one registration is enough. If you registered via *147#, your SHA profile already exists. You can log into Afya Yangu and sha.go.ke using your National ID to view and manage your profile (add dependants, check status, see contribution history), but you do not need to re-register.

What is the SHA paybill number for M-Pesa payment?

SHA Paybill number is 200222. Your account number is your National ID number. Go to M-Pesa → Lipa na M-Pesa → Pay Bill → Business Number 200222 → Account Number (your National ID) → Amount (your monthly premium) → PIN → Send. You will receive an M-Pesa confirmation SMS. Keep it as proof of payment.

I lost my SHA membership number. How do I find it?

Log into sha.go.ke or afyayangu.go.ke using your National ID number — your SHA member number will be displayed in your profile. You can also dial *147#, log in with your PIN, and check your profile details from the menu. Alternatively, call SHA on 0800 720 601 with your National ID and they can retrieve it.

Can I register someone else for SHA — a parent or elderly relative?

Yes. You can complete the registration process on behalf of someone else as long as you have their National ID, their registered phone number, and their basic personal details (date of birth, county/ward). You will go through *147# or the online portal the same way — just using their information instead of yours. At in-person Huduma Centres, you may be asked to show your own ID as well when registering on behalf of someone else.

Is there a waiting period before SHA cover kicks in?

SHA has not published a fixed waiting period equivalent to NHIF’s old 60-day wait. Coverage is generally considered active once your registration is confirmed and your first monthly contribution is received. For planned procedures or non-emergencies, register and pay as early as possible rather than waiting until you need the hospital.

How do I check my SHA or SHIF cover status?

Three ways: (1) Dial *147# and navigate to your profile status. (2) Log into afyayangu.go.ke — your cover status and contribution history are displayed on your dashboard. (3) Visit any SHA-accredited hospital — the hospital system verifies your cover in real time using your National ID or SHA number. Always check your status before a planned hospital visit to avoid surprises.
