SHA Monthly Contribution Rates Kenya
The SHA monthly contribution rate in Kenya is 2.75% of your gross monthly income, with a minimum of KES 300 per month. This page shows exactly what that means for every salary range, includes an instant calculator, and explains how both employed and self-employed Kenyans pay.
1. The Official SHA Contribution Formula
The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) — the contribution that sits under SHA — uses a simple income-based formula. This replaced the old NHIF band system where everyone in a salary range paid the same flat amount.
The minimum of KES 300 kicks in for anyone earning below KES 10,910 per month. At exactly KES 10,910, the 2.75% calculation produces KES 300.02 — just above the minimum — so the percentage rule takes over from that point upward.
This is sourced directly from the official KRA SHA contribution table, which states: earnings of KES 0 – KES 5,999 attract KES 300, and KES 6,000 and above attract 2.75% of gross salary.
SHA replaced NHIF in 2024. Under NHIF, contributions were capped at flat bands — for example KES 1,700 for anyone earning over KES 100,000. Under SHA, the 2.75% continues to scale upward with no cap, which means higher earners contribute significantly more than they did under NHIF.
2. Instant SHA Contribution Calculator
Enter your gross monthly salary below. Your SHA contribution is calculated instantly using the official 2.75% rate and the KES 300 minimum rule.
SHA is calculated on your gross monthly income — your total earnings before any deductions are taken out. Using your net (take-home) pay will produce a lower figure than what actually appears on your payslip.
3. SHA Contribution by Salary Range
The table below shows the monthly and annual SHA contribution for every salary range — calculated using the official 2.75% SHIF rate. All figures are based on the midpoint and endpoints of each band.

|---|---|---|---|
| Below KES 10,910 | KES 300 Min | KES 3,600 | Minimum applies |
| KES 11,000 – KES 24,000 | KES 303 – KES 660 | KES 3,630 – KES 7,920 | 2.75% of gross |

7. Frequently Asked Questions
Is SHA contribution the same as NHIF?
No. SHA replaced NHIF in October 2024 as part of Kenya's Universal Health Coverage reforms. NHIF used fixed contribution bands — for example, everyone earning over KES 100,000 paid KES 1,700 per month regardless of their actual salary. SHA uses a percentage model (2.75%) so contributions scale directly with income. Higher earners pay significantly more under SHA than they did under NHIF.
My payslip shows a different SHIF amount — is that an error?
Check the gross income figure your employer used as the base for the deduction. Some employers use basic salary only while others include allowances. The correct base is your total gross earnings before deductions. If the figure still does not reconcile, calculate 2.75% of your gross yourself using the calculator above and raise the discrepancy with your payroll or HR team early — late corrections create reconciliation problems.
What happens if I miss a monthly SHA payment?
Your SHA cover lapses to Inactive status. You cannot access benefits at SHA-contracted hospitals while Inactive. To reactivate, pay the current month's contribution via M-Pesa Paybill 200222 using your National ID as the account number. Your status updates to Active within 24 hours — there is no penalty or waiting period for reactivation.
Do I pay SHA on top of PAYE or is it separate?
SHA (SHIF) and PAYE are separate statutory deductions — both are calculated on gross income but independently of each other. SHA is not deducted before PAYE is calculated, and PAYE does not affect your SHA amount. They appear as separate lines on your payslip.
I earn different amounts each month — how do I know what to pay?
If your income varies month to month — for example because of commissions, overtime, or irregular business income — your SHA contribution changes with it. Use the calculator on this page each month to calculate the correct amount based on that month's gross income. For self-employed contributors, the Means Test gives you a baseline figure, but you can always pay above the minimum.
Can my employer pay less SHA than 2.75%?
No. The 2.75% rate is the statutory minimum set by the Social Health Insurance Act. Employers cannot legally deduct and remit less than 2.75% of an employee's gross income. If you suspect your employer is under-deducting, compare your payslip using the calculator above and raise the issue with your HR department.
