SHA Update Personal Details: Change Your Name, County & Info on Afya Yangu

Some details on your SHA Afya Yangu profile you can correct yourself in a couple of minutes — your email, county, ward, marital status. Others — your name, date of birth, and National ID number — are checked against the government’s IPRS identity database and cannot be self-edited. This guide separates the two clearly, and walks through exactly how to fix each one.

📍 Which SHA guide do you need?

This page covers updating your personal details — name, ID number, date of birth, county, email, marital status. If you specifically need to change your registered phone number, see our dedicated guide: Change SHA Phone Number — Afya Yangu & Office Method. If your issue is your employment status or contribution amount, see Change SHA Employment Status or SHA Punguza Malipo.

⚡ Quick Answers
Can I change my name on SHA myself?
No. Your name is checked against IPRS, the government’s national ID database, and cannot be self-edited on the portal. You must visit a Huduma Centre or SHA office with your original National ID.
Can I change my county or email myself?
Yes. County, sub-county, ward, email address, marital status, and preferred facility are all self-service fields under My Profile on afyayangu.go.ke.
Why does my SHA registration keep failing after I “fixed” my name?
Almost always a residual mismatch — a missing middle name, extra space, or hyphen that still does not match IPRS character for character. See Section 4 below.
Is updating personal details on SHA free?
Yes. Both the self-service portal update and the in-person Huduma Centre correction are free through official SHA channels.

1. What Counts as a “Personal Detail” on SHA?

Your SHA Afya Yangu profile holds two different kinds of information, and the portal treats them very differently. Some fields you can edit yourself the moment you notice they’re wrong. Others are locked because SHA cross-checks them against IPRS — the Integrated Population Registration System — and only an SHA officer can amend them after verifying your original documents in person.

2. Self-Service: Email, County, Marital Status, Facility

These fields can be updated directly by you, in a few minutes, with no office visit and no waiting period.

Update Self-Service Details on Afya Yangu

Works for email, county, sub-county, ward, marital status, and preferred facility.

  1. Go to afyayangu.go.ke and click Sign In
  2. Enter your National ID number and 4-digit PIN, then the OTP sent to your registered number
  3. Click My Profile
  4. Select the field you want to change — Contact Details for email, Location for county/sub-county/ward, or Personal Details for marital status and preferred facility
  5. Enter the new information and click Save
  6. Confirm the change is reflected by refreshing your profile page

Changing county because you moved? After saving your new location, check whether your linked preferred facility still makes sense — SHA uses your county, sub-county, and ward to help assign your primary care facility. Update the facility field too if it no longer matches where you live.

3. Identity-Linked: Name, Date of Birth, National ID Number

Your name, date of birth, National ID number, and gender are not editable from your profile. SHA verifies these fields against IPRS every time your account is checked — during registration, the Means Test, a dependant submission, or a hospital lookup. Because of that, only an SHA officer can amend them, and only after physically verifying your original National ID.

⚠️ Why you can’t just edit these yourself

Allowing self-service changes to your name, date of birth, or ID number would make it trivial to impersonate someone else’s SHA account or shift a contribution assessment fraudulently. The in-person requirement exists to protect your identity and your cover — not to make the process harder than it needs to be.

1

Visit a Huduma Centre or SHA Office

  1. Go to your nearest Huduma Centre, SHA office, or former NHIF branch
  2. Bring your original National ID — not a copy or photo
  3. Explain which field needs correcting and why — a typo, a name change, or a mismatch you discovered during registration
  4. The officer verifies your identity against IPRS and amends the SHA record directly
  5. Allow 3–5 working days for the correction to reflect across all SHA systems, including the hospital provider portal
2

Call the SHA Toll-Free Helpline First (Optional)

  1. Call 0800 720 601 — toll-free from Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom
  2. Ask them to confirm exactly which field is mismatched and what documents you’ll need
  3. This can save you a wasted trip if the issue turns out to be something else, like a portal sync delay

4. The Most Common Problem: Name Mismatch Against IPRS

A name mismatch is the single most common identity-linked problem on SHA, and it quietly causes several errors that look unrelated on the surface:

Where It Shows UpWhat You See
Means TestSubmission rejected or stuck on Pending indefinitely — see our Means Test guide
Dependant registrationSpouse or child status stuck on Pending for more than 7 days — see our dependant status guide
Hospital verification“Contributor Not Found” at the reception desk — see our Contributor Not Found guide
Initial registration“Name Does Not Match ID Records” error during *147# or portal registration

The cause is almost always the same: the name typed into SHA does not match your National ID exactly — a dropped middle name, an extra space, a hyphen present in one record but not the other, or a shortened version of your name used out of habit.

How to check it yourself first: Open your physical National ID and compare it word for word, space for space, against the name shown on your SHA profile or the name you entered at registration. If they don’t match exactly — including every middle name — that mismatch is very likely your problem.

5. What to Bring for a Name or ID Correction

Documents Checklist

  1. Original National ID — required, not a copy or photo
  2. SHA member number, if you know it — speeds up the lookup but not required
  3. If your name legally changed (marriage, deed poll), bring the supporting legal document — marriage certificate or gazette notice
  4. If there’s a long-standing discrepancy between your ID and other records, a statutory declaration from a commissioner of oaths can help the officer resolve it on the spot

6. After Updating — What to Recheck

Once your details are corrected — whether self-service or via Huduma Centre — go back and recheck anything that may have failed because of the old information:

  • Re-check your Means Test status if it was previously rejected due to a name or ID mismatch
  • Re-check any dependant submissions that were stuck on Pending — they may now clear automatically
  • Confirm your status at eligibility.sha.go.ke before your next hospital visit, especially if you previously hit “Contributor Not Found”
  • If you updated your county, double-check your preferred facility still matches where you live
  • If you updated marital status, remember this does not automatically add your spouse — you still need to add them as a dependant separately
⚠️ Give it time before panicking

Self-service changes usually reflect immediately. Huduma Centre corrections to identity-linked fields can take 3–5 working days to sync across the Means Test, dependant verification, and hospital provider systems. Don’t resubmit a Means Test or dependant application before that window has passed — doing so can create duplicate records that take even longer to untangle.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my name on SHA myself?

No. Your name is an identity-linked field cross-checked against IPRS, the government’s national ID records database. You cannot edit it yourself on the Afya Yangu portal. You must visit a Huduma Centre or SHA office with your original National ID to have it corrected.

Why does my name keep failing verification even after I corrected it?

This usually means the correction was made on the SHA side but has not yet synced with the systems that check your Means Test or dependant submissions, or the name still does not match IPRS character for character, including middle names and spacing. Allow 3 to 5 working days after a Huduma Centre correction, then recheck.

Can I update my county or sub-county on SHA myself?

Yes. County, sub-county, ward, email address, marital status, and preferred facility are all self-service fields you can update directly from My Profile on the Afya Yangu portal without visiting an office.

Does updating my county affect my assigned hospital or facility?

It can. Your county, sub-county, and ward are used to determine your linked primary care facility. After updating your location, check My Profile to confirm your preferred facility still matches where you actually live, and update it if needed.

I got married. Do I need to update anything besides adding my spouse?

Update your marital status under My Profile in addition to adding your spouse as a dependant. These are two separate steps — updating civil status does not automatically add a dependant, and adding a dependant does not automatically update your civil status.

Can I change my date of birth on SHA?

Date of birth is an identity-linked field verified against IPRS, the same as your name and National ID number. It cannot be self-edited on the portal. Visit a Huduma Centre with your original National ID to request a correction.
