What to Bring When Visiting an SHA Facility

1
National ID Card (Original)

SHA facilities use your ID number to verify your membership and eligibility. Bring the original card — a photocopy is not sufficient for initial verification.

2
Active Phone Number (The One Registered with SHA)

Some facilities may send an SMS verification to your registered number to confirm your membership. Make sure this number is available or recently updated.

3
Medical Records (If You Have Them)

Bring any relevant medical documents, vaccination records, or hospital cards from previous visits. This helps the facility understand your medical history.

4
Insurance Information

If you have other insurance (private, employer-provided, or Huduma), inform the facility upfront so they can coordinate billing correctly.

5
Payment Method (Cash or M-Pesa)

Most SHA facilities accept M-Pesa for co-payments or services not fully covered by SHA. Have a working phone with M-Pesa access as a backup.

Frequently Asked Questions — SHA Facilities in Nairobi

Can I use SHA at any hospital in Nairobi, or only these accredited ones?

SHA only covers accredited facilities in its network. Using a non-accredited hospital means you will pay out of pocket. However, in a life-threatening emergency, you can visit any facility first and explain you have SHA when stable enough to be transferred. Always use facilities from this approved list for planned visits.

What happens if the facility I want is not on this list?

Call the facility directly to ask if they are SHA accredited. If they say yes but are not here, they may have just joined the network and our list may not be fully updated yet. You can also call SHA on 0800 720 601 to verify facility accreditation in real-time.

If my status is “Pending,” can I use SHA at these facilities?

Most facilities will not treat you on a Pending registration — they may turn you away at the counter. You should resolve your Pending status first.

What is a co-payment? Do I have to pay anything at the facility?

SHA covers most basic services, but some treatments or medications may require a small co-payment (typically KES 100–500). The facility will inform you upfront. You can pay by cash or M-Pesa. No surprise charges should occur — always ask the cost upfront.

Can I visit a Level 2 clinic if I registered for Level 4 coverage?

Yes. Your SHA registration allows you to use any accredited facility at or below your assigned level. If you are registered for Level 4, you can visit Level 2, 3A, 3B, and 4 facilities. You cannot use Level 5 or 6 unless they have a specific Level 4 clinic within their hospital.

What if the facility asks me to pay and says SHA is not accepting claims?

This is unusual but can happen if the facility’s connection to the SHA system is temporarily down. Ask the facility manager to try again, or ask for a receipt and report it to SHA on 0800 720 601 with the facility name and date.

Can I take my dependants to these facilities on my SHA registration?

Yes, but only if they are registered as your dependants on your SHA account.
