How You Get the Card in the First Place
The card is issued at an NSSF office as part of registration, not mailed to you or generated on the self-service portal. What you need to bring depends on how you’re registering:
If you’re registering as an employee
Visit the nearest NSSF office with:
- Your original National ID, Alien Card, or Passport, plus a copy
- An introduction letter from your employer
NSSF records your details and registers you on the spot, then issues the membership card. Your employer will need the NSSF number on that card to start making contributions for you.
If you’re registering as self-employed / voluntary
Visit the nearest NSSF office with:

No employer letter is needed. You pay a minimum initial contribution of KES 200 to activate your membership — this shows up as your first contribution on your statement — and you’re issued the card.

Your NSSF Number Never Changes
You register with NSSF only once in your lifetime. Your membership number is your permanent account number — it stays the same even when you move to a new employer. If you change jobs, you simply give your new employer that same number; you don’t re-register or get issued a new card for that reason.
