When you generate your KNEC e-certificate, KNEC gives you a 6-month window to download it from the “My Certificates” list in your dashboard. This 6-month period starts from the issue date of your certificate.

- January 15, 2024: You generate and download your KCSE certificate.
- January 15 – July 15, 2024: Download button is active. You can download as many times as you want.
- July 16, 2024 onwards: The 6 months have passed. Download button disables automatically.
- Certificate record: Stays in your “My Certificates” history forever, but you can no longer download it.
Why the 6-Month Window?
KNEC sets this window to encourage users to download their certificates promptly. It doesn’t expire permanently — you can always regenerate. But you can’t download indefinitely from a single issue without regenerating.

- The Download button is greyed out or disabled — you can click it, but nothing happens.
- All other information (exam type, year, index number, issue date) remains visible.

The Certificate Itself
Your KNEC certificate is not deleted. KNEC still has a record of your exam results in their database. The download window is just a time limit on how long you can download that specific PDF. The certificate itself is permanent.
How to Regenerate Your Certificate (Get a Fresh Copy)
Step-by-Step: Regenerate in 4 Steps
- Log into your KNEC account: Go to ecertificate.knec.ac.ke and log in with your email + OTP.
- Click “Generate E-Certificate”: From your dashboard, start a new certificate generation (same as the first time).
- Provide your details: Enter your index number, select exam type (KCSE or KCPE), and the year you took the exam. Your profile details are pre-filled.
- Pay the fee: KES 1,200 + VAT + eCitizen charges. Payment is the same as before. Once confirmed, your new certificate is generated.
- Download the new PDF: Click Download Certificate. Your new certificate appears as a separate entry in “My Certificates” with a fresh 6-month download window.
Key point: Regenerating is exactly like downloading for the first time. You’re not applying for a new certificate or changing anything — you’re just generating a fresh PDF copy with a new issue date and new 6-month window.

How Your Dashboard Looks
After you regenerate, your “My Certificates” list will show both entries:
- Old entry: Issue date January 15, 2024. Download button disabled (greyed out). You can still see it, but can’t download.
- New entry: Issue date today (July 20, 2024). Download button active. You can download for the next 6 months.
Both stay in your history permanently. You can only download the latest one (the active one with the enabled Download button).
