KNEC E-Certificate Fee & Payment Methods — Complete Guide
KNEC ecertificate fee is clearly structured: a base fee plus VAT and eCitizen charges. This guide breaks down exactly what you pay, how payment works, which methods are accepted, and how long confirmation takes — plus troubleshooting for common payment problems.
Whether you’re downloading your KCSE/KCPE certificate or sending a verification report to an employer, understanding the payment process upfront removes surprises at checkout.
Certificate Generation Fee — What You Pay
Base fee: KES 1,200 + VAT + eCitizen charges
This is the standard fee to generate and download your KCSE or KCPE e-certificate. The final total shown at payment may be slightly higher due to VAT (Value Added Tax) and any payment processing charges from eCitizen. The exact breakdown is always displayed before you confirm payment.
Why Three Components?
- KES 1,200 base fee: KNEC’s charge for generating, securing (with blockchain verification), and delivering your digital certificate.
- VAT: Kenya’s Value Added Tax, applied by KNEC as required by law. Typically adds 16% to the base fee.
- eCitizen charges: Minimal payment processing fees from eCitizen (the government’s digital payment gateway). Vary slightly by payment method.
✓ Transparency: You will see the complete final total (base + VAT + eCitizen fees) on the payment confirmation screen before you commit to pay. Never pay a fee that wasn’t displayed first.

Payment Methods — How to Pay
Supported Payment Options
KNEC accepts all payment methods offered by eCitizen (Kenya’s government digital payment platform). These include:
M-Pesa
Most common. KNEC sends an STK push to your registered phone number — you see a prompt on your phone, enter your M-Pesa PIN, and payment completes instantly.
Visa / MasterCard
Credit or debit card. You enter card details on the eCitizen payment page or use your bank’s app.
Bank Transfer
Available through eCitizen. Instructions provided on the payment page.
Other eCitizen Methods
Whatever other payment channels eCitizen supports at the time. Check the payment page for the latest options.
💡 Tip: M-Pesa is fastest and most straightforward for mobile users. If you have a Kenyan phone number linked to M-Pesa, the STK push method is usually completed within seconds of clicking “Proceed to Pay.”
Payment Confirmation Times
How Long Does Payment Take?
Typical confirmation: 10–30 seconds after you complete the payment.
- M-Pesa STK push: You see the prompt on your phone, enter PIN, and confirmation arrives at the KNEC portal within 10–20 seconds.
- Open Payment Page (browser): You redirect to eCitizen, complete payment, and are redirected back. Typically 20–30 seconds total.
- Card or bank transfer: May take slightly longer if your bank requires additional verification steps. Usually within 30 seconds.
Once confirmed, your e-certificate is generated immediately and appears in your “My Certificates” list, ready to download.
Payment Process — Step by Step
The Payment Flow
- Click Proceed to Pay: After verifying your identity and certificate details, click the payment button on the KNEC portal.
- Choose Payment Method: KNEC displays payment options. Select your preferred method (M-Pesa, card, etc.).
- For M-Pesa: An STK push is sent to your registered phone. A prompt appears — enter your 4-digit M-Pesa PIN.
- For Other Methods: Click “Open Payment Page” to redirect to eCitizen in your browser, then complete payment there.
- Confirmation Arrives: Within 10–30 seconds, your payment is confirmed. You’re returned to the KNEC portal.
- Certificate Ready: Your e-certificate is now generated and appears in your dashboard under “My Certificates.” Click Download to open the PDF.
What If Payment Shows “Pending Payment”?
Stuck Payment State — How to Fix It
Occasionally, the KNEC portal may show “Pending Payment” even though you successfully paid through eCitizen. This is a synchronization issue — the payment went through, but KNEC didn’t receive the confirmation callback yet.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Don’t pay again. If it says “Pending Payment,” your payment likely succeeded — don’t make a second payment.
- Find the “Check status now” button: On the order or transaction that shows “Pending Payment,” look for a button labeled “Already paid? Check status now” (or similar).
- Click it: This forces KNEC to check with eCitizen for the latest payment status.
- Reconciliation: The system polls eCitizen, finds your confirmed payment, and updates the order status within seconds.
- Certificate appears: Once reconciled, your certificate is immediately generated and available for download.
⚠️ Important: If you see “Pending Payment” and cannot find the reconciliation button, or the issue persists after clicking it, contact KNEC support with your transaction reference and payment date. Include a screenshot of the stuck order.
Refunds & Payment Issues
Accidental Payment or Wrong Amount?
If you paid by mistake or believe you were charged incorrectly, refund requests are reviewed case-by-case by KNEC support.
- Contact KNEC: Email or call KNEC support with your transaction reference and order ID.
- Provide reason: Explain why you’re requesting a refund (accidental payment, duplicate charge, etc.).
- Processing time: Refunds may take several business days after approval.
- Note: Refunds for certificates already used (downloaded or verified) are unlikely to be approved.
No Receipt?
Every successful payment should produce a receipt. You can find it in your KNEC dashboard under “Orders” or “Transaction History.” If you don’t see a receipt and the order still shows “Pending Payment,” use the “Check status now” button (see above). If payment was successful but the receipt is missing, contact KNEC support with your phone number and date of payment.
Verifier Organization Payments (B2B)
Note: If you’re an institution (employer, university) verifying candidate credentials, see our Verifier Organization setup guide for information on B2B payment options, prepaid wallet credits, and bulk verification pricing. The consumer payment methods and fees described above apply to individual applicants, not institutional verifiers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the KNEC e-certificate fee?
The fee to generate an e-certificate is KES 1,200 + VAT + eCitizen charges. This is the base fee; the final amount shown at payment may be slightly higher due to VAT and eCitizen payment processing charges.
What payment methods does KNEC accept?
KNEC accepts M-Pesa via eCitizen, plus any other payment method offered by eCitizen, such as Visa and MasterCard. For M-Pesa, an STK push is sent to your registered phone number. The exact payment options available to you are shown on the payment confirmation screen.
How long does payment confirmation take?
Payment confirmation typically takes 10-30 seconds after you enter your M-Pesa PIN or complete payment through your chosen eCitizen method. Your certificate is generated immediately after confirmation and appears in your dashboard.
Can I download my certificate before paying?
No. Payment is required before your certificate is generated and made available for download. The download link only appears after payment is confirmed and your certificate is successfully created.
What if my payment shows ‘Pending Payment’ but I already paid?
On your orders or transaction history, look for an “Already paid? Check status now” or similar button. Click it to force the system to reconcile with eCitizen and confirm your payment. This typically resolves the issue within seconds.
Can I get a refund if I paid by mistake?
Refund requests are reviewed case-by-case by KNEC support. Contact KNEC with your transaction reference, order ID, and reason for refund. Processing may take several business days after approval.
Is there a fee to send a verification report?
Yes. Sending a verification report (to an employer or third party) involves a separate payment through eCitizen. The exact fee depends on the delivery method and is shown before you confirm payment.
What if I need to download my certificate again after 6 months?
Generated certificates are downloadable from “My Certificates” for 6 months from issue date. After that window closes, the Download button disables. To get a fresh copy, regenerate by paying the standard fee again (KES 1,200 + VAT + eCitizen charges). This creates a new certificate entry with its own 6-month download window.
Is VAT included in the KES 1,200 fee?
No. The KES 1,200 is the base fee. VAT (typically 16%) is added on top, and eCitizen payment processing charges are added as well. The final total is always shown before payment.
Can I pay for multiple certificates at once?
Each certificate request is a separate payment. If you need KCSE and KCPE certificates, you must generate and pay for each one individually. Each payment is KES 1,200 + VAT + eCitizen charges.
