KNEC KCSE Certificate Online — Download Your E-Certificate Now
KNEC KCSE certificate online is the official way to generate and download your Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education certificate entirely through the KNEC e-certificate portal. You register with your email, complete your profile, verify your identity against government records, and download your certificate as a PDF with a blockchain verification hash for authenticity.
This guide walks you through the complete process: registration, profile completion, exam details entry, identity verification, payment, and download. If you get stuck at any step, use the buttons above to reach us on WhatsApp — we can help you complete the process.
✓ Quick facts: Certificate generation fee is KES 1,200 + VAT + eCitizen charges. The system covers KCSE exams from 1989 onwards, and generated certificates are downloadable for 6 months from issue date.
Who This Guide Is For
This guide is for individuals (students and alumni) who want to download their own KCSE certificate from the KNEC e-certificate portal. If you are an employer, university, or other organization that needs to verify candidates’ certificates, that is a separate process — see our Verifier Organization guide instead.
What You’ll Need Before You Start
- Valid email address — the portal sends a one-time code (OTP) here each time you log in.
- Mobile phone number — required in your profile.
- National ID number — required if you are a Kenyan citizen.
- Date of birth — in dd/mm/yyyy format, must match exactly what’s on your National ID.
- Your exam Index Number — your examination candidate number assigned when you registered to sit your KCSE (not your National ID). You should find this on your exam entry letter or admission slip.
The 5-Step KCSE Certificate Download Process
Visit knec portal and click E-Certificate to access the portal, then click Sign Up. Select “Applicant” as your account type. Enter your full name and email address, then click “Send OTP.”
A 6-digit one-time code (OTP) will be sent to your email. Enter it to proceed with registration. Note: OTP codes expire after 10 minutes. If your code expires, you can request a new one. Once verified, your account is created.
Step 1 — Profile Details: After login, click Fill / Update Profile from the dashboard. Select your citizenship (Kenya or Other Country), enter your full name as per your National ID, provide your email, date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy), and phone number. If you are a Kenyan citizen, enter your National ID number. You can optionally upload a profile photo. Click to proceed to the next step.
Step 2 — Review: Review all entered information for accuracy before proceeding. Your name and date of birth especially must match your National ID exactly.
Step 3 — Verification: Your profile is saved and automatically verified against IPRS (Integrated Population Registration System) using your National ID. Verification typically completes within seconds. Once it passes, your profile is complete and you can request your certificate.
Log in and click “Generate E-Certificate” from your dashboard. Your name, date of birth, National ID, and phone number are pre-filled from your profile. You now need to enter:
- Index Number: Your examination index (candidate number), not your National ID. Find this on your exam entry letter or admission slip.
- Exam Type: Select “KCSE”.
- Exam Year: Select the year you sat your exam. The system covers exams from 1989 to the present.
Click to proceed to verification.
The system performs two checks automatically:
- IPRS Identity Verification: Confirms your name and date of birth match IPRS records.
- System Certificate Lookup: Confirms a certificate exists matching your Index Number, exam type (KCSE), and exam year.
Both checks must pass to proceed. If either fails, you will need to review your details and try again. See the “Common Problems” section below for troubleshooting.
The payment screen shows KES 1,200 + VAT + eCitizen charges as the certificate generation fee. You can pay via:
- M-Pesa STK push: A payment prompt is sent to your registered phone number. Enter your M-Pesa PIN to complete payment.
- Browser payment page: Click “Open Payment Page” to pay via browser.
Payment confirmation typically takes 10–30 seconds. Once confirmed, your certificate PDF is ready. Click “Download Certificate” to open the PDF, which includes a blockchain verification hash for authenticity.
Important: The 6-Month Download Window
Once you download your certificate, you can re-download it from your “My Certificates” section for 6 months from the issue date. After 6 months, the download button will disable, but your record stays visible in your history. If you need a fresh copy after that, you must pay the KES 1,200 fee again to regenerate a new certificate with a new 6-month window. See our guide to expired certificates for more detail.
Common Problems & How to Fix Them
IPRS Verification Fails
What it means: The system could not verify your identity against IPRS records, usually because your name and/or date of birth does not match your National ID exactly.
How to fix it:
- Go back to your profile and ensure your full name matches your National ID exactly — including spelling, spacing, and order.
- Check that your date of birth is correct and in the correct format (dd/mm/yyyy).
- Update your profile and resubmit for verification.
- If IPRS verification fails repeatedly after correcting your details, contact KNEC support.
See our full IPRS verification troubleshooting guide for more detail.
System Certificate Lookup Fails
What it means: The system could not find a certificate in the KNEC database matching your Index Number, exam type, and exam year.
How to fix it:
- Double-check your Index Number — make sure you are entering your examination candidate number, not your National ID.
- Verify you selected the correct exam type (KCSE) and exam year.
- Review your details and try again.
Payment Shows as “Pending Payment” But I Already Paid
What it means: Payment may have been processed but the status has not yet synced back from eCitizen to the KNEC portal.
How to fix it:
- On the payment screen or in your Transaction History, click the button that says “Check Status Now” or “Already paid? Check status now”.
- The system will reconcile your payment with eCitizen. If the payment was successful, your status will update.
After You Download Your KCSE Certificate
Once your certificate is downloaded, you can:
- Re-download: Whenever you need a fresh copy within the 6-month window, log in to your account and go to “My Certificates” to download again — there’s no additional fee.
- Send a verification report: If an employer, university, or other organization needs to verify your certificate officially, you can send a verification report through the KNEC system. This is a separate process with its own fee. See our verification report guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find my exam Index Number?
Your Index Number is your examination index assigned when you sat your KCSE exam. You should find it on your exam admission slip or exam entry letter from your school. It is not the same as your National ID.
Can I download a KCSE certificate from a past year?
Yes. The system contains certificates from 1989 onwards. Enter your Index Number, exam type (KCSE), exam year, and other details to locate your certificate.
What if my IPRS verification keeps failing?
Ensure your name and date of birth in your profile match your National ID exactly. If the issue persists, contact KNEC support.
I paid for my certificate but the system still says “Pending Payment”. What do I do?
Click the “Check Status Now” button on the relevant row in your dashboard or Transaction History. The system will reconcile with eCitizen for the latest payment state.
How long is my certificate downloadable after I generate it?
Generated certificates remain downloadable from the “My Certificates” list for 6 months from the issue date. After that, the Download button is disabled, but the record stays in your history. To get a fresh copy after 6 months, you must pay the certificate generation fee again, which creates a new entry with its own 6-month download window.
What is the blockchain verification hash on my certificate?
Each certificate includes a blockchain verification hash that can be used to verify the certificate’s authenticity and ensure it has not been tampered with. The certificate is anchored on a blockchain using Merkle-tree cryptographic proofs, and a unique hash is provided for independent verification.
What is the difference between downloading my certificate and sending a verification report?
When you download your certificate, you receive a PDF for your own records. A verification report is a separate service that sends an official document from KNEC directly to a third party (such as an employer or university). Both services require payment. See our verification report guide for details.
How quickly does payment confirmation happen?
Payment confirmation typically takes 10–30 seconds.
Click one of the buttons at the top of the page to reach us on WhatsApp. We can walk you through registration, troubleshoot verification failures, help with payments, or download your certificate entirely on your behalf. It’s optional, paid assistance — but faster than troubleshooting alone.
