How to Check Grade 10 (KJSEA) School Placement in Kenya

If your child sat the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), this guide covers exactly how to check Grade 10 school placement — online and via SMS — how the 12-school selection actually works, and what really happens if you want to request a change. Every date and figure below is from the actual 2025/2026 placement cycle, not a generic template.

The Official Portals (and Why There’s Confusion Online)

You may see several different web addresses mentioned for checking KJSEA results and Grade 10 placement — this isn’t a scam, it’s genuinely two separate government systems for two different things. KNEC publishes exam results at its own portal, while the Ministry of Education runs a separate placement system, mirrored across more than one URL:

  • kjsea.knec.ac.ke — KNEC’s official results portal (subject scores & pathway recommendation), confirmed by KNEC’s own results-issuance circular
  • selection.education.go.ke/my-selections — the Ministry’s placement system, most commonly cited in official statements and national news coverage
  • placement.education.go.ke — the same placement platform under a different subdomain
  • selection-placement.kemis.go.ke/my-selections — also live and functionally identical to the placement system above
Results vs. placement — two different portals: kjsea.knec.ac.ke is KNEC’s own results portal, confirmed by an official KNEC circular, and shows subject-level scores and the recommended pathway. It is not where confirmed Senior School placement is shown — for that, use the Ministry of Education portals above (selection.education.go.ke, placement.education.go.ke, or selection-placement.kemis.go.ke).

How to Check Grade 10 (KJSEA) School Placement

Check on the official portal

Go to selection.education.go.ke/my-selections, enter the learner’s KJSEA assessment number exactly as printed on the registration or result slip, and submit. The portal shows the confirmed senior school, pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science), and subject combination. Download the confirmation slip once it loads.

Check via SMS (no internet needed)

Send the learner’s KNEC assessment number to short code 22263. The reply costs roughly Ksh 30 and works on any basic phone — useful on release day, when portal traffic from over a million candidates checking at once can slow things down.

Know the difference between “selected” and “placed”

Before official placements are released, the same SMS service only confirms which schools a learner applied to — not a final placement. KNEC publicly flagged misinformation during the 2025 cycle after some reports implied results were out when only the application-check service had launched. Once placements are officially released by the Ministry, the same shortcode and portal then show the confirmed school.

Tip: Cross-check the portal result against the SMS reply, and verify with the Junior School head teacher before making any arrangements. KNEC has repeatedly warned that no legitimate official will ever ask for payment to “fix” or guarantee a placement.

How the 12-School Selection Actually Works

Placement isn’t based on KJSEA marks alone. Before results, every learner selects 12 senior schools in total, split by priority:

ChoiceNumber of SchoolsType
First choice (pathway & track)7 schools9 boarding total (4 in-county + 5 out-of-county) + 3 day schools in home sub-county
Second choice3 schools
Third choice2 schools

The Ministry’s automated system then matches these preferences against four other factors: merit (KJSEA and prior assessment performance), psychometric test results, equity considerations (regional balance and affirmative action), and available capacity per school and pathway. This is why two learners with similar scores can end up in different schools — preference, merit, fairness, and space are all being balanced at once.

Top performers get priority boarding placement: the top 2 learners per gender in each STEM track per sub-county, and the top-performing learner per gender in the Social Sciences and Arts & Sports Science tracks per sub-county, are placed in a boarding school of their choice.

Where Learners Actually Ended Up: The Real Pathway Split

In the first placement cycle, learners were distributed across the three Senior School pathways as follows:

PathwayShare of Learners Placed
STEM51%
Social Sciences38%
Arts & Sports Science11%

How to Change a Grade 10 Placement (Review & Transfer Process)

If a learner is placed in a school or pathway that doesn’t fit, the Ministry opens a formal review window — and in the pioneer cycle, there were actually two of them:

Round 1

To Be Confirmed December _____, 2026

The first 7-day review window, opened three days after placements were released. Requests are lodged through the learner’s Junior School head teacher, or escalated to the Ministry’s Sub-County/County education office — never directly to the senior school or KNEC.

Round 2

To be Confirmed January ___, 2026

A second window specifically for learners whose first request went unresolved, aimed largely at redistributing capacity toward under-subscribed schools, including well-resourced C1 schools in less “popular” regions.

Across both rounds, the Ministry processed 183,000 review and transfer requests: 116,000 were approved and 66,000 were declined, mostly due to limited capacity in oversubscribed national and extra-county schools. Requests to switch into an already-full popular school are far less likely to succeed than requests involving schools with open vacancies.

Note: Review window dates are announced fresh each admission cycle and will differ for future cohorts — the process and channels described here are consistent, but always confirm the exact current dates through the Junior School or official Ministry announcements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the official KJSEA / Grade 10 placement portal?

There are two separate official portals. KNEC’s results portal at kjsea.knec.ac.ke shows subject-level results and the recommended pathway. The Ministry of Education’s placement system — at selection.education.go.ke/my-selections, also mirrored at placement.education.go.ke and selection-placement.kemis.go.ke/my-selections — shows the confirmed Senior School and subject combination.

Does the SMS shortcode 22263 show my child’s final placement?

It depends on the stage. Before results are released, sending the assessment number to 22263 only shows the schools the learner selected, not a final placement. KNEC has publicly warned that some reports wrongly implied results were out when the SMS service simply confirmed applications. Once placements are officially released, the same shortcode returns the confirmed school and pathway.

How many schools does a learner select for Grade 10?

12 schools in total: 7 for the first-choice pathway and track, 3 for the second choice, and 2 for the third choice. Of these 12, 9 must be boarding schools (4 within the learner’s home county and 5 outside it) and 3 must be day schools within the learner’s home sub-county.

Can I change my child’s Grade 10 placement if I’m unhappy with it?

Yes, during an official review window. In the pioneer 2025/2026 cycle the Ministry opened a first review window from December 23 to 29, 2025, and a second window from January 6 to 9, 2026, for unresolved cases. Requests are channelled through the learner’s Junior School head teacher or the Ministry’s Sub-County/County education office, not directly to the senior school or KNEC.

How likely is a placement review request to be approved?

In the 2025/2026 cycle, the Ministry processed 183,000 review and transfer requests, approving 116,000 and declining 66,000, mainly due to limited capacity in oversubscribed schools. Requests to switch into already full national or extra-county schools are less likely to succeed than requests involving schools with open vacancies.

Which pathway do most learners get placed into?

In the first placement cycle, 51% of learners were placed in the STEM pathway, 38% in Social Sciences, and 11% in Arts and Sports Science.
