KPLC Paybill Number: 888880 and 888888
Kenya Power doesn’t use one paybill for everything. According to KPLC’s own official vendor list, 888880 is for buying prepaid tokens, while 888888 is a completely separate paybill for paying a postpaid bill. There’s even a third, 888899, reserved for new connection fee collections. Mixing these up is the single most common mistake people make when paying Kenya Power from M-Pesa.
How to Buy KPLC Tokens From M-Pesa
Go to Lipa na M-Pesa
On your Safaricom SIM Toolkit, open the M-PESA menu, select Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
Enter business number 888880
This is the token-purchase paybill — not the postpaid one.
Enter your meter number
Type your prepaid meter number as the account number, then the amount you want to buy.
Enter your M-Pesa PIN and confirm
Enter your PIN and confirm to complete the purchase.
Receive and enter your token
Safaricom sends a token purchase SMS with a 20-digit number. Key it into your meter’s keypad and press enter to load the units.
The *977# USSD Menu
Dial *977# to reach KPLC’s self-service menu. The options appear in this order: 1) Prepaid services, 2) Postpaid services, 3) New connections, 4) Report incidences, 5) Jua for Sure, 6) Billing complaints. Under Prepaid services you can buy a token (you’ll be redirected to your M-Pesa menu to enter your PIN) or retrieve your last three purchased tokens. Under Postpaid services you can pay your bill, check your bill amount, activate bill alerts, or submit a self-meter-reading. KPLC’s USSD menu also includes a Kiswahili option and lets you name your accounts for easier reference.
How Fees Actually Work
Kenya Power’s own published material does not list a separate KPLC service fee for M-Pesa token or bill payments beyond the standard Safaricom Lipa na M-Pesa paybill tariff. In other words, what you pay is generally the normal M-Pesa paybill charge for your transaction amount, not an extra charge from KPLC itself.
Troubleshooting
I paid the wrong paybill — sent a bill payment to 888880, or a token purchase to 888888
Contact Kenya Power’s customer care with your M-Pesa transaction code and account/meter details so they can trace and reallocate the payment. KPLC’s own site provides a Prepaid Reallocation & Reversal Form and a separate Postpaid Reallocation & Reversal form specifically for this kind of error, downloadable from kplc.co.ke or requestable via customercare@kplc.co.ke.
My token didn’t load into the meter
Reconfirm the 20-digit token number is entered correctly. Check that you’re loading it into the correct meter (query the meter number), and if it still fails, check whether the meter is displaying a tamper icon or open-circuit warning. If the token was already used, try reloading it — if that fails, contact the national contact centre.
I bought too many tokens by mistake
Kenya Power’s FAQs confirm there is no refund for a mistaken excess token purchase in the way a postpaid deposit is refunded; instead, allow a minimum of 10 working days for a refund to be processed once you’ve completed the required reallocation procedure with your M-Pesa confirmation as proof.

FAQ
What is KPLC’s paybill number for buying tokens?
For prepaid tokens, KPLC’s M-Pesa paybill number is 888880. Use it with your meter number as the account reference.
Is the postpaid paybill number the same as the token paybill?
No. KPLC’s own official vendor list shows two separate Safaricom paybills: 888880 for prepaid token purchases, and 888888 for postpaid bill payments. Using the wrong one won’t credit the account you intended.
Is there a paybill for new KPLC connections?
Yes. KPLC’s official documentation lists a third, separate paybill, 888899, specifically for new connection fee collections, distinct from both the token and postpaid bill paybills.
Is there a USSD code for KPLC?
Yes. Dial *977# to access KPLC’s self-service USSD menu, covering prepaid token purchases, postpaid bill payments, new connections, and fault reporting.
