How to Pay SHA Monthly Contribution

How to Pay SHA Monthly Contribution in 2026 (Why It Shows Annual)

How to Pay SHA Monthly Contribution: Why It Now Shows Annual

If you’re self-employed and your SHA dashboard is asking for KES 6,000 or 7,200 instead of the KES 500 or 600 a month you expected — you’re not being overcharged. SHA removed direct monthly payments for informal-sector members in June 2025. Your “monthly rate” is now billed as one annual total. Here’s exactly what that means and your two real ways to pay it.

⚡ Quick Answers
Can I just pay KES 500 this month like before?
No, not as a standalone monthly payment. KES 500/month is now the rate used to calculate your annual bill (500 × 12 = KES 6,000).
Why does my dashboard show a monthly figure at all?
That’s your means-tested monthly rate — it’s shown for reference, but what you’re actually asked to pay is the annual total.
Is there any way to still pay in smaller amounts?
Yes — Lipa Pole Pole, a Hustler Fund loan that covers your annual premium and lets you repay it daily, weekly, or monthly.
Does this affect employed people?
No. Employer payroll deductions continue monthly, unchanged.

Your Monthly Rate → What You’ll Actually Be Billed

Means-Tested Monthly RateAnnual Amount You’re Billed
KES 300 (minimum floor)KES 3,600 / year
KES 500KES 6,000 / year
KES 600KES 7,200 / year
Your specific rateRate × 12
Where the rate comes from: SHA’s means-testing tool estimates your contribution at 2.75% of your assessed annual household income, with a floor of KES 300/month. If your dashboard shows a different monthly figure than expected, that’s a means-test result — not an error — though you can appeal it if you believe it’s wrong.

Your Two Real Payment Options

Spread It Out

Lipa Pole Pole

A Hustler Fund loan pays your annual premium upfront on your behalf. You then repay that loan in daily, weekly, or monthly installments — interest-free, but it’s a loan, not a direct SHA payment.

How to Pay the Annual Amount in Full

This uses the same paybill as any other SHA payment — see our full how to pay SHA via M-Pesa guide for the complete walkthrough. In short:

1

Open M-Pesa or Airtel Money

Dial *334# for M-Pesa or *222# for Airtel Money.

2

Select Pay Bill: 200222

Same SHA paybill used for every payment type.

3

Enter Your National ID as the Account Number

Then enter your full annual amount, not the monthly-equivalent figure.

4

Confirm with Your PIN

Save the confirmation SMS. Your cover activates once SHA processes the payment, usually within 24 hours.

How to Pay via Lipa Pole Pole (Installments)

1

Dial *147# or *254#

*147# is SHA’s own USSD menu; *254# opens the Hustler Fund menu directly.

2

Select “Lipa Pole Pole” (or “Make Payment” then “Lipa Pole Pole” on *147#)

The system will show your outstanding annual premium.

3

Choose Hustler Fund as Your Financier

Your annual premium is paid to SHA instantly by the loan.

4

Pick a Repayment Schedule

Daily, weekly, or monthly — repayment begins immediately once the loan is disbursed.

Before you choose Lipa Pole Pole: You need a clean Hustler Fund repayment record to qualify. If you’ve defaulted on a previous Hustler Fund loan, you may be locked out of this option until it’s cleared — in that case, paying the annual amount in full is your only route.

FAQ: SHA Monthly Contribution

Can I still pay SHA monthly?

Not as a direct standalone payment if you’re self-employed or informal. Contributions are billed annually now. Lipa Pole Pole lets you repay in monthly installments, but that’s loan repayment, not a direct monthly SHA payment.

Why does my dashboard show a monthly figure if I have to pay annually?

The monthly figure is your means-tested rate, shown so you understand how your bill was calculated. The actual charge is that rate × 12, due as one annual premium.

What if I’ve fallen behind and now have arrears?

You’ll need to clear the outstanding balance, either in full via paybill 200222 or through Lipa Pole Pole. Your cover may be inactive until the arrears are settled.

Is Lipa Pole Pole a loan or a payment plan?

It’s a loan from the Hustler Fund. The loan pays your annual SHA premium immediately, and you repay the loan afterward — interest-free, but still a borrowing arrangement, not a direct instalment payment to SHA.

Can I opt out of Lipa Pole Pole later?

Yes, at any time via *147#. But once you opt out, any remaining balance on your annual premium becomes due immediately through direct payment.

Does the monthly-to-annual change apply to me if I’m employed?

No. If you’re formally employed, your employer continues deducting 2.75% of your gross salary every month and remitting it directly — this change only affects self-employed and informal-sector members.
