Driving Licence Check Kenya: 4 NTSA Ways to Verify Your Status

NTSA has outlined four official ways to check whether your driving licence or number plate application is ready for collection, still being processed, or needs further action. Each method comes directly from NTSA’s own channels — you do not need to visit an office just to find out your status.

This guide covers all four methods in full, including the exact eCitizen steps and the SMS number to use if you have no internet access.

The 4 Ways to Check Your Driving Licence Status

Log In to the eCitizen Portal

This is the fastest method and gives you the most detail. The portal shows whether your licence is active, expired, suspended, or still under processing, and also provides updates on number plate production and collection points.

  1. Go to ecitizen.go.ke and log in with your National ID and password.
  2. Navigate to the NTSA dashboard.
  3. Click Online Services, then Other Services.
  4. Select Uncollected Smart Driving Licences and Number Plates.
  5. Under the Options button, choose whether you are checking a driving licence or a number plate.
  6. Click Search. For a Smart Driving Licence, enter your ID Number. For a number plate, enter your vehicle registration number.

Use the NTSA Mobile App

The official NTSA Mobile App is available on both Android and iOS. Once installed, sign in and navigate to the “My Licence” or vehicle services section to view your application status. This is the most convenient option if you are checking from your phone and do not want to open a browser.

Send an SMS to 22846

If you do not have internet access or a smartphone, you can verify your licence status by sending your National ID number via SMS to 22846. After sending the message, you will receive a reply indicating whether your licence or number plate is ready for collection or still being processed.

You can also call NTSA directly on 0709 932 000 to speak with an officer.

Visit an NTSA Office in Person

For issues that cannot be resolved online — such as delays or missing requirements — visiting an NTSA service centre is an option. Carry your National ID when you go. NTSA officers can provide detailed updates and guide you on the next steps.

NTSA’s main office is at 316 Upper Hill Chambers, Second Ngong Avenue, Nairobi. Offices operate Monday to Friday during standard working hours.

Driving licence vs number plate: two separate checks

On eCitizen, you select the type before searching. Use your ID number to check a driving licence, and your vehicle registration number to check a number plate. They are handled as separate queries on the same screen.

What the Status Results Mean

When you check via eCitizen or SMS, the system returns one of several statuses:

Status shownWhat it means
ActiveYour licence is valid and current.
ExpiredYour licence has passed its expiry date. You need to renew.
SuspendedYour licence has been suspended. You will need to contact NTSA directly.
Under ProcessingYour application has been received and is still being produced or verified.
Ready for CollectionYour licence or number plate is ready. The portal shows the collection point.

Renewal periods: According to NTSA’s eCitizen portal, driving licences can be renewed for either 12 months or 3 years from the date of issue — the choice is the holder’s. Renewal is done online via eCitizen, with payment via mobile money, and you print your renewal slip from the portal after payment.
