What’s Changed: Apply, Collect, or Download?
Until recently, every birth certificate applicant had to collect a printed copy in person from a Huduma Centre or Civil Registration office. Since 22 June 2026, that’s no longer the only option.
Still available. Choose Mombasa County and your sub-county at the Pick-Up Location step, then collect from Huduma Centre Mombasa (Digo Road) or, for Likoni residents, Huduma Centre Likoni. Bring your ID and SMS notification.
New. Once your application is approved, log back into eCitizen, generate the certificate as a PDF, and print it yourself — at home, at work, or at any cyber café. No Huduma Centre visit required.
Fee note: Government has announced plans to scrap the KES 200 standard fee entirely, but as of this writing it has not yet taken effect. Budget for the current fee until an official confirmation lands.

The application itself is identical wherever you are in Mombasa — only the “exact place of birth” and pick-up answers change. Find your sub-county below.
Changamwe Birth Certificate
Changamwe covers the port- and airport-adjacent part of Mombasa, with Chaani Hospital handling much of the area. If your child was born at home rather than in a facility, use the sub-location name — Port Reitz, Kipevu, Miritini — not a street address.
Collection: Huduma Centre Mombasa on Digo Road, a short matatu ride away.
Jomvu Birth Certificate
Jomvu is the smallest sub-county by ward count. If your child was born at Jomvu Model Health Centre, write the facility name exactly as it appears on your birth notification — shortening it is a common cause of mismatch delays. There’s no separate Jomvu Huduma Centre, so collection is the same as the rest of the county.
Kisauni Birth Certificate
Kisauni is the most spread-out sub-county in Mombasa, with dispensaries and health centres serving Bamburi through to the more rural Mwakirunge. If your notification lists a dispensary rather than a hospital, that’s normal — answer YES to the health-facility question and enter the dispensary’s exact name. For home births in the outer wards, use the sub-location name, not a vague description.
Likoni Birth Certificate
Likoni is the one part of Mombasa where logistics genuinely matter — it’s separated from the rest of the city by the channel, crossed via the Likoni Ferry or Mombasa Gate Bridge. Likoni Sub-County Hospital and Mrima Health Centre (now offering full maternity and caesarean services) handle most facility births here. There is a Huduma Centre in Likoni itself, but confirm with them before travelling — not every application is automatically routed there. If you’re using the new download option, this removes the crossing from the process entirely.
Mvita (Mombasa Island) Birth Certificate
Mvita has more registered health facilities than any other sub-county in Mombasa, anchored by Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital — Kenya’s second-largest public hospital. Write the facility name as “Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital” to match official records. Mvita is also the most convenient sub-county for collection: Huduma Centre Mombasa sits within the island itself.
Nyali Birth Certificate
Nyali mixes public dispensaries with well-known private hospitals — Aga Khan, Premier, and Pandya Memorial all serve the area, alongside Kongowea Health Centre. If born at a private hospital, copy the facility name exactly from your discharge paperwork rather than retyping from memory. Collection follows the rest of mainland Mombasa: Huduma Centre Mombasa, reached via Nyali Bridge.

How the download option works
Once your application clears review, you no longer have to visit a Huduma Centre to get a physical copy. You can download the certificate yourself and print it wherever is convenient.
How to download once approved:
- Log in to your eCitizen account (the one used to apply, or the parent/guardian account)
- Go to Civil Registration Services → E-Birth Certificate
- Enter the Notification Number from your birth notification (sent by SMS, email, or printed on the Acknowledgment of Birth Notification)
- Use Search Record to pull up the application and confirm the child’s, mother’s, and father’s details
- Once status shows approved, download the certificate and print it — at home, at work, or at any cyber café

The eCitizen Birth Certificate Application — Step by Step
This is the standard “Current Birth Certificate” application, used countrywide. Have your birth notification and ID details ready before you start.
The first screen lists what you’ll need: a scanned birth notification, ID for the applicant (if 18+), and ID for the parents. It confirms the application should be submitted at least 30 days after the birth.
State who is applying. If the child is under 18, apply from the parent or guardian’s eCitizen account, not the child’s. You’ll need a National ID or passport number for the applicant.
Choose the application type — almost always “New Birth Certificate without Amendment” for a first application — then enter the Entry or Notification Number, the child’s name, date of birth, and gender. Two fields people get wrong most often:
- Was the Child Born in a Health Facility? Answer YES for any hospital, health centre, or dispensary — even a small one. Only answer NO for a genuine home birth.
- Exact Place of Birth. If born in a facility, type the full official name exactly as it appears on the birth notification. If born at home, use the sub-location name, not a street address or landmark.
Choose to collect from Head Office Nairobi or locally. Select Mombasa County, then your sub-county. The system shows the relevant Huduma Centres — for most of Mombasa that’s Huduma Centre Mombasa on Digo Road; Likoni residents can also list Huduma Centre Likoni.
For both mother and father, you’ll be asked if their details are available. If yes, select the ID type (National ID, passport, alien ID, refugee ID, or “unable to validate”), then the ID number — the system runs a Search against government records to try to auto-match the name. If a parent’s details genuinely aren’t available, select NO; this is an accepted answer.
Upload a clear scan or photo of the birth notification, plus ID documents for the applicant and parents. PDF, JPG, and PNG are accepted. If you’ve lost the birth notification, request a duplicate from the health facility where the birth occurred.
Review every field carefully — you cannot edit after submitting. Accept the declaration, submit, and proceed to payment. You’ll get SMS and email updates as the application moves through review.

❌ Born in Likoni — collect there or in town?
If you’re not using the download option, weigh the ferry/bridge crossing against confirming with Huduma Centre Likoni in advance.
❌ Born at a small dispensary in Kisauni or Jomvu
Smaller facilities sometimes get mistyped or abbreviated on notification documents. A mismatch between what you type and what’s on official record is one of the most common reasons applications get flagged for review.
❌ Application shows a “Nairobi County only” warning
This message can appear if the County of Birth field still defaults to Nairobi before you’ve changed it.
❌ Parent’s ID details won’t validate
The Search function on the Parents’ Information step sometimes fails to auto-match a name against government records, especially with name-order mismatches.

Yes. Since 22 June 2026, approved applications can be downloaded and printed directly from eCitizen — no visit to Huduma Centre Mombasa or Likoni required.
What if I don’t know the exact name of the health facility?
Check your printed birth notification or the SMS/email you received at the time of birth — the facility name there is the one to use, copied exactly. If you’re unsure, WhatsApp us and we’ll confirm it for free.
Can I collect from Nairobi instead of Mombasa?
Yes — the Pick-Up Location step lets you choose Head Office Nairobi regardless of where the birth occurred.
What if the father’s or mother’s details aren’t available?
Select “NO” when asked if those details are available. This is an accepted answer and won’t block your application.
How long does processing take in Mombasa?
Typically 2–4 weeks after payment confirms — the same as the rest of the country. Mombasa doesn’t have a separate processing queue.
I was born in Likoni — do I have to cross the ferry to collect my certificate?
Not necessarily. Huduma Centre Likoni can handle some collections — confirm with them first — or use the new download-and-print option to avoid the crossing entirely.
