What’s Changed: Apply, Collect, or Download?
Until recently, every birth certificate applicant had to collect a printed copy in person from a Huduma Centre or Civil Registration office. Since 22 June 2026, that’s no longer the only option.

The application itself is identical wherever you are in Bungoma — only the “exact place of birth” and pick-up answers change. Bungoma’s nine constituencies also serve as its nine sub-counties, so the names you select on eCitizen match the constituency names below directly.
Kanduyi Birth Certificate
Kanduyi hosts Bungoma town itself and has more registered health facilities than any other constituency in the county, including Bungoma County Referral Hospital along Kanduyi–Mumias Road and the private Aga Khan Health Service Centre. If your child was born at the referral hospital, write the name exactly as “Bungoma County Referral Hospital” to match official records. This is also the most convenient constituency for collection, since Huduma Centre Bungoma sits right in town.
Bumula Birth Certificate
Bumula has 25 health facilities spread across its 7 wards, with a strong mix of public dispensaries and faith-based facilities. If your child was born at a smaller dispensary in Khasoko, Kabula, or Siboti, double-check the spelling against your printed birth notification — smaller facility names are the most common source of mismatches on the application.
Webuye East Birth Certificate
Webuye East has the fewest wards in Bungoma alongside Sirisia, but still carries a relatively high facility count for its size. If your notification lists a facility in Mihuu or Maraka ward, copy the name exactly as registered — these smaller-ward facilities are sometimes shortened informally in conversation but need the full official name on the form.
Webuye West Birth Certificate
Webuye West has more health facilities than any other constituency in Bungoma — including Bokoli Hospital, a key facility for the area. Webuye town itself (once anchored by the Pan Paper mill) sits within this constituency. With this many facilities to choose from, it’s worth confirming the exact registered name of smaller clinics before submitting.
Kabuchai Birth Certificate
Kabuchai is centred on Chwele, a key market town in the constituency. If your child was born at a facility in Bwake or Mukuyuni ward, use the sub-location name for home births rather than a description like “near the market” — eCitizen needs a specific administrative name to match.
Sirisia Birth Certificate
Sirisia Sub-County Hospital, a Level 4 facility, is the main public referral point here. Malakisi Health Centre also serves part of the constituency. Sirisia borders Uganda, so if your child was born near the border area, confirm the Kenyan-side facility name carefully — border-area facilities are occasionally confused with cross-border ones on application forms.
Tongaren Birth Certificate
Tongaren has more Ministry of Health public facilities than any other constituency in Bungoma, anchored by Tongaren Model Health Centre and Makutano Health Centre. With 6 wards to cover, if you’re in a more outlying ward like Soysambu or Milima, use the exact sub-location name for home births rather than the general ward name.
Kimilili Birth Certificate
Kimilili Sub-County Hospital (Level 4), located in Kibingei ward, is the main public facility for this constituency. Makhonge Health Centre also serves the area. If your child was born at the sub-county hospital, write it as “Kimilili Sub-County Hospital” — older records sometimes still list it as “Kimilili District Hospital,” which can cause a mismatch if copied verbatim from an older document.
Mount Elgon Birth Certificate
Mount Elgon (sometimes recorded as Elgon or Cheptais) has the highest number of health facilities of any constituency in Bungoma, anchored by Mt. Elgon Sub-County Hospital in Kapsokwony. Given the terrain around Mount Elgon itself, some residents in the more remote wards travel further for both delivery and collection — the new download option is especially useful here to avoid an extra trip into Bungoma town.

Once your application clears review, you no longer have to visit a Huduma Centre to get a physical copy. You can download the certificate yourself and print it wherever is convenient — especially useful for residents of Mount Elgon, Tongaren, or other constituencies further from Bungoma town.
How to download once approved:
- Log in to your eCitizen account (the one used to apply, or the parent/guardian account)
- Go to Civil Registration Services → E-Birth Certificate
- Enter the Notification Number from your birth notification (sent by SMS, email, or printed on the Acknowledgment of Birth Notification)
- Use Search Record to pull up the application and confirm the child’s, mother’s, and father’s details
- Once status shows approved, download the certificate and print it — at home, at work, or at any cyber café

The eCitizen Birth Certificate Application — Step by Step
This is the standard “Current Birth Certificate” application, used countrywide. Have your birth notification and ID details ready before you start.
The first screen lists what you’ll need: a scanned birth notification, ID for the applicant (if 18+), and ID for the parents. It confirms the application should be submitted at least 30 days after the birth.
State who is applying. If the child is under 18, apply from the parent or guardian’s eCitizen account, not the child’s. You’ll need a National ID or passport number for the applicant.
Choose the application type — almost always “New Birth Certificate without Amendment” for a first application — then enter the Entry or Notification Number, the child’s name, date of birth, and gender. Two fields people get wrong most often:
- Was the Child Born in a Health Facility? Answer YES for any hospital, health centre, or dispensary — even a small one. Only answer NO for a genuine home birth.
- Exact Place of Birth. If born in a facility, type the full official name exactly as it appears on the birth notification. If born at home, use the sub-location name, not a street address or landmark.
Choose to collect from Head Office Nairobi or locally. Select Bungoma County, then your constituency/sub-county. The system shows the relevant Huduma Centre or civil registration office — for most of Bungoma that’s Huduma Centre Bungoma in town.
For both mother and father, you’ll be asked if their details are available. If yes, select the ID type (National ID, passport, alien ID, refugee ID, or “unable to validate”), then the ID number — the system runs a Search against government records to try to auto-match the name. If a parent’s details genuinely aren’t available, select NO; this is an accepted answer.
Upload a clear scan or photo of the birth notification, plus ID documents for the applicant and parents. PDF, JPG, and PNG are accepted. If you’ve lost the birth notification, request a duplicate from the health facility where the birth occurred.
Review every field carefully — you cannot edit after submitting. Accept the declaration, submit, and proceed to payment. You’ll get SMS and email updates as the application moves through review.
