SHA Contribution History Kenya — How to Check Your SHIF Payment Records
Check your SHA contribution history to confirm your payments are being recorded, understand your coverage status, and spot any gaps or errors before they affect your access to healthcare. This guide covers all four methods — USSD, the Afya Yangu portal, the eligibility checker, and SMS — plus what each status means, how to fix common problems, and how to check your dependants’ payments.
Whether you pay via payroll deduction, M-Pesa, or government subsidy, your contributions should appear in your history within 48 hours. If they don’t, this page shows exactly what to check and what to do.
Your M-Pesa payment may have gone through, but if you used the wrong account number, entered your ID with spaces, or your employer delayed their remittance, the history won’t reflect it immediately. This page shows how to verify your payment went to SHA and how to trace it if it’s stuck. WhatsApp us — KES 200 to trace it →
| Method | Speed | What You See |
|---|---|---|
| USSD *147# | Instant | Latest status, last payment date, coverage Active/Inactive/Pending |
| Afya Yangu Portal | Instant | Full history, download PDF/CSV, all payment dates and amounts |
| Eligibility Checker | Instant | Coverage status and last payment date only |
| SMS to 1550/21101 | 1–2 min | Account status, last payment date, coverage status |
Understand Your Contribution Status
Your SHA contribution history shows three possible statuses. Each means something different and requires different action if things go wrong.
You are registered under SHA and making regular contributions. Your coverage is active and you can access services at any SHA-accredited facility without restriction. This is the status you want to see.
Your registration is still being processed or means-testing is underway. Complete your profile via *147# or the Afya Yangu portal to move to Active. Pending status can block service access.
You haven’t registered yet, your registration lapsed, or you’ve missed recent contributions. To reactivate: register via eCitizen or *147#, then make your payment via M-Pesa. Inactive means you cannot access SHA services.
Pro tip: If your status is Pending and you see a “Contributor Not Found” error, it often means your employer’s records don’t match your national ID. Check your employment registration with your employer or use the troubleshooting section below.
The Four Methods to Check Your SHA Contribution History
All four methods access the same official SHA records. Choose whichever is most convenient for you — no internet required for USSD or SMS.
This works on any phone with airtime, regardless of whether you have data. You’ll receive the result via SMS within seconds.
- Dial *147# on your phone (works on Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom)
- Select Citizenship (Kenyan Citizen, Foreign Resident, or Refugee)
- Enter your National ID number (do not include spaces)
- Select “Check Status” or “Membership Details”
- You will receive an SMS with your latest contribution status and last payment date
ℹ️ Best for: Quick status check on any phone
This is where you’ll see every single payment, dates, and amounts. You can also download a complete PDF statement for your records.
- Visit the official Afya Yangu Portal (search “Afya Yangu” or go to the official SHA domain)
- Sign in using your National ID number and your 4-digit PIN
- You will receive an OTP (One-Time Password) via SMS — enter it
- Click on “Contribution History” or “My Payments”
- Your full payment history will display with dates, amounts, and status
- To download: Click the download icon to save as PDF or CSV
ℹ️ Best for: Detailed records, PDFs, and downloading statements
This is the quickest way to confirm if you’re covered without logging in. It shows your status and last payment date in one step.
- Go to official sha portal
- Select your Identification Type (National ID, Passport, Refugee ID, etc.)
- Enter your ID number (exactly as registered)
- Click “Check”
- Your status will show immediately: Active, Inactive, or Pending, plus your last payment date
ℹ️ Best for: Quick hospital eligibility check before visiting
Send a text message to get your status. Note: SMS charges apply (standard SMS rate).
- Compose a new SMS
- Type: STATUS [your National ID number]
(Example: STATUS 12345678) - Send to 1550 or 21101
- You will receive an automated reply with your account details and last payment date within 1–2 minutes
ℹ️ Best for: No data, instant backup if USSD isn’t responding
How to Read Your SHA Contribution Statement
Once you log into the Afya Yangu portal and view your Contribution History, you’ll see a table with several columns. Here’s what each one means and what to check.
| Column | What It Means | What to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Payment Date | The date your contribution was recorded in the system | Should be within 48 hours of your M-Pesa payment or payroll deduction. If it’s much later, there may have been a processing delay. |
| Amount | The KES amount that was deducted | Verify it matches the amount you paid. If your employer deducts KES 1,000 but the history shows KES 500, escalate to HR or SHA support. |
| Status | Whether this payment was accepted (Confirmed/Processed) or is still being verified (Pending) | Confirmed = payment is in. Pending = still being verified (check back in 24–48 hours). |
| Coverage Period | The month or period this payment covers | Make sure there are no gaps. If June’s payment is missing but you know you paid, investigate immediately. |
| Last Payment Date | The most recent month on your account | This is the most critical field. If it’s more than 30–60 days ago, your status may drop to Inactive soon. |
Red flag: If you see a payment date that’s older than 2–3 months, or if there are obvious gaps (e.g., January and February are there, but March is missing), your coverage is at risk. Contact SHA or reach out to us — KES 200 to trace it.
Check Your Dependants’ SHA Contribution History
If you’ve registered your spouse and children as dependants on your SHA account, you can check their payment records from the same portal. This is especially important for families — you need to confirm all members show Active status, not just yourself.
Use your National ID, PIN, and OTP to sign in to your account (not the dependants’ accounts).
On the dashboard, look for a tab or section labeled “Dependents,” “Family,” or “Linked Members.”
Click on each family member’s name to see their individual contribution history, status (Active/Inactive/Pending), and last payment date.
Just like your own history, look for any missing months or statuses that show Inactive or Pending. Each dependant needs their own Active status to be covered.
Note: If a dependant shows Inactive or Pending, you’ll need to either make a payment on their behalf via *147# or visit a Huduma Centre to update their details. The main account holder (you) covers payroll deductions, but each dependant must be separately registered.

You made your M-Pesa payment, got the confirmation SMS, but it doesn’t show in your contribution history. This is more common than you’d think, and there are three main reasons.
❌ Wrong Account Number on M-Pesa
You entered your phone number, a spouse’s ID, or left spaces in your National ID when the account must be your ID with no spaces.
❌ Employer Delayed Their Remittance
If your payment comes via payroll deduction, your employer may have processed it from their bank account 1–2 weeks after the month it covers.
❌ System Processing Delay
Your payment was correct and went to the right account, but SHA’s system is still processing it (usually resolved within 48 hours).

Troubleshooting Every Issue
❌ “Contributor Not Found” or “ID Not Recognized”
You entered your ID correctly, but SHA’s system can’t find you in their records. This usually means your registration is incomplete or your employer’s records don’t match the government database.
❌ Portal Asks for PIN But You Don’t Remember It
Your PIN is a 4-digit code set when you first registered. If forgotten, the portal won’t let you proceed.
❌ Status Shows “Pending” for Weeks
Pending usually clears within a few days as your registration is finalized, but if it’s been 2+ weeks, something’s stuck.
❌ Portal Won’t Load or Gives an Error
Browser issues, cookies, or server problems can block access to the Afya Yangu portal.
❌ Different Payment Amounts in History Than You Paid
Your M-Pesa receipt shows KES 1,200, but the portal shows KES 800. This usually means part of your payment went to a different account or fee.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for my payment to show in my contribution history?
Usually 24–48 hours after payment is confirmed. M-Pesa payments process fastest (within hours). Employer payroll deductions take 48 hours to a week, depending on when your company remits to SHA.
Can I download a PDF of my entire contribution history?
Yes. Log into the Afya Yangu portal, go to Contribution History, and click the download button. You can save it as PDF or CSV for your records.
What if my contribution history shows a gap but I’m sure I paid?
Check your M-Pesa receipt and verify: (1) the Account Number is your National ID with no spaces, (2) the amount is correct, and (3) it was sent to Paybill 200222. If all three are correct, wait 48 hours. If it still doesn’t show, contact SHA or reach out to us (KES 200).
I’m employed but my history is empty. What’s wrong?
Your employer may not have submitted your registration details to SHA yet, or your employment record doesn’t match the government database. Contact your HR department and ask if they’ve registered you under SHA. You can also register yourself via eCitizen or *147#.
Can I check someone else’s contribution history?
No, each person can only check their own history by logging in with their own ID. However, if you’re the main account holder, you can check your dependants’ histories from the Dependents section of your Afya Yangu account.
What if my status is Inactive and I need healthcare urgently?
Make a payment immediately via M-Pesa to Paybill 200222 (Account = your National ID). Your status should update to Active within 48 hours. In the meantime, contact the hospital and explain — many facilities will process emergency care and sort the SHA coverage afterward. Read SHA Payment Not Reflecting if your payment doesn’t immediately update your status.
Is checking my contribution history free?
Yes, completely free. USSD, SMS (standard SMS charges apply), the portal, and the eligibility checker all access the same free data. The only fees are SHA’s monthly contribution itself, not for checking your history.
Why does my dependant’s history show Inactive while mine shows Active?
Each dependant has their own account and contribution record separate from yours. If a dependant is Inactive, you’ll need to either make a payment on their behalf via *147# or register them separately. The main account’s Active status doesn’t automatically cover dependants’ records.
