Kenya’s physical motor vehicle logbook — the green booklet every vehicle owner has kept in their glovebox for decades — is officially being retired. From June 10, 2026, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is replacing it entirely with the NTSA eLogbook: a digital vehicle registration certificate you access through your eCitizen account.

This guide covers everything a Kenyan vehicle owner needs to know — what the eLogbook is, how to access it on eCitizen TIMS, what the 10 new features mean for you, how vehicle transfers now work, what the QR code does, and what to do if you get stuck on the new system.

⚡ Quick Answers
What is the NTSA eLogbook?
A digital version of your motor vehicle registration certificate (logbook), accessible through your eCitizen TIMS account at ntsa.ecitizen.go.ke. Replaces the physical green booklet from June 10, 2026.
How do I get my eLogbook?
Log in to ntsa.ecitizen.go.ke → New NTSA Portal → Motor Vehicle → View → select your vehicle → Download eLogbook. It is completely free.
When does the eLogbook launch in Kenya?
June 10, 2026. From that date NTSA will no longer issue physical logbooks for any transaction.
Does my old physical logbook become invalid?
Not immediately. But the next time you do any NTSA transaction on your vehicle, your record migrates to the eLogbook system. Physical logbooks will gradually become obsolete.
How much does the eLogbook cost?
Free. Downloading your eLogbook from eCitizen costs nothing. The Ksh 2,600 replacement fee for lost logbooks is also gone entirely.
Can I show my eLogbook at a police checkpoint?
Yes. Show it on your phone. Police can also verify your vehicle status in real time by scanning the QR code — no printed document needed.
⚠️ June 10 is less than a month away — is your eCitizen account ready?

Every vehicle owner in Kenya will need an active eCitizen account linked to their National ID to access their eLogbook. If your account is locked, you’ve forgotten your password, or your vehicle isn’t showing on TIMS — sort it now before the rush. WhatsApp us on 0751947700 for same-day account help.

NTSA eLogbook goes live on eCitizen — physical logbooks officially retired

What Is the NTSA eLogbook?

The NTSA eLogbook is a digital motor vehicle registration certificate that replaces the physical paper logbook Kenya has used for decades. Instead of a green paper booklet, your vehicle’s full ownership record now lives in a secure digital system — accessible through the NTSA TIMS portal on eCitizen or the official NTSA mobile app.

It carries all the same information your old logbook contained — registration number, chassis number, engine number, owner details, and registration history — plus new capabilities the paper version could never offer: QR code verification, instant online transfers, cloud storage, and automated compliance reminders.

💡 Important: The eLogbook is not a separate app or download. It lives inside your existing eCitizen/NTSA TIMS account. If you already use eCitizen for inspection booking or DL renewal, your eLogbook will be in the same place.

How to Access Your eLogbook on eCitizen — Step by Step

From June 10, here is exactly how to access and download your eLogbook from the NTSA TIMS portal.

3
Click “New NTSA Portal”

From your eCitizen dashboard, click on the NTSA service tile, then select New NTSA Portal to be redirected to the full TIMS services dashboard.

4
Click Motor Vehicle → View

In the NTSA TIMS dashboard, click Motor Vehicle in the left side menu, then select View. All vehicles registered under your National ID will appear here.

5
Select your vehicle

Click on your vehicle’s registration number. Your vehicle’s full details and current eLogbook will display on screen.

6
Download your eLogbook

Your vehicle not showing in TIMS?

This usually means the vehicle is not registered under your National ID on the system — often because a transfer was done manually but not fully processed digitally. Contact NTSA or WhatsApp us on 0751947700 — we can help you trace and resolve it.

What the eLogbook Means If You Are Buying a Second-Hand Car

This is the most important section if you are considering purchasing a used vehicle in Kenya. Fake and altered logbooks have cost Kenyan car buyers hundreds of millions of shillings over the years. The eLogbook closes that gap permanently.

Before you pay a single shilling for any second-hand vehicle, you can now:

  • Ask the seller to show you the eLogbook QR code
  • Scan it with your smartphone in seconds
  • See the real registered owner’s name — does it match the person selling?
  • Check if the vehicle has any active bank or SACCO loans against it
  • Verify the chassis and engine numbers match the car in front of you
  • Confirm the inspection status and history
  • Check whether the vehicle has been reported stolen
⚠️ If what the QR code shows does not match what the seller is telling you — walk away.

This check costs nothing and takes 30 seconds. From June 10, there is no excuse for buying a vehicle without doing it. If you need help interpreting what the QR scan shows, WhatsApp us on 0751947700.

What the eLogbook Means for Vehicle Transfers

Vehicle transfers in Kenya used to mean long queues, physical visits to NTSA or Huduma Centre, stacks of paper documents, manual stamping, and days of waiting. That process is gone.

Old ProcessNew eLogbook Process
Physical visit to NTSA/Huduma Centre requiredCompleted entirely online via eCitizen
Manual document stampingDigital processing — instant confirmation
Days or weeks waiting for transfer to reflectOwnership updates in real time
Risk of fake logbooks and fraudulent transfersQR code verification eliminates fraud
Physical logbook replacement: Ksh 2,600Free download anytime from eCitizen

💡 What you still need for a transfer: Both buyer and seller must have active eCitizen/NTSA TIMS accounts. The vehicle must be free of outstanding fines and financial liens before transfer can be processed. Transfer fees are still paid through eCitizen.

What the eLogbook Means for Vehicle Inspection

The eLogbook integrates directly with NTSA’s inspection system. When your vehicle passes inspection, the result updates automatically in your eLogbook record — visible to anyone who scans your QR code, including police at roadblocks.

💡 Inspection booking remains the same process through the eCitizen portal. What changes is that your full inspection history is now part of your permanent digital vehicle record, verifiable in real time by any party scanning your QR code. What Happens to Your Old Physical Logbook?

Your existing physical logbook does not become immediately invalid on June 10. However:

SituationWhat Happens
No transaction needed soonYour physical logbook remains your record for now. Keep it safe until fully migrated.
You do a transfer, re-registration, or any NTSA transactionYour record automatically migrates to the eLogbook system during that transaction.
You lose your physical logbookAfter June 10, simply download your eLogbook from eCitizen. Free. No police abstract needed.
NTSA issues new documentsAll new documents from June 10 onwards are issued as eLogbooks only. No new physical logbooks will be printed.
Keep your physical logbook safely until your vehicle migrates

Until your vehicle’s record has been fully migrated to the eLogbook system, your physical logbook is still your primary ownership document. Do not discard it prematurely.

Common Problems You May Face With the eLogbook

Troubleshooting Guide

1
Can’t log in to eCitizen / forgot password

Use the Forgot Password option on the eCitizen login page. An OTP is sent to your registered phone number. If your registered number has changed or is inactive, you will need to visit a Huduma Centre for account recovery — or WhatsApp us on 0751947700, we assist with this daily.

2
Vehicle not appearing in TIMS account

The vehicle may not be registered under your National ID on TIMS. This happens when a logbook transfer was done manually but not fully processed digitally. Contact NTSA at info@ntsa.go.ke or 0709 932 300, or WhatsApp us and we can guide you on the resolution steps.

3
eLogbook PDF won’t download

Switch to Google Chrome. Disable pop-up blockers — the PDF opens in a new window. Ensure you have a stable internet connection. If still failing, try a different device or clear your browser cache.

Tip: Try downloading on a PC rather than mobile if you’re having browser issues on your phone.
4
Not sure how to navigate the new eCitizen TIMS system

This is the most common issue for first-time eCitizen users and those who set up accounts years ago. We help vehicle owners navigate the NTSA portal remotely via WhatsApp — WhatsApp 0751947700, reply within minutes.

5
eCitizen portal is down or slow

The eCitizen platform has experienced downtime before, especially during high-traffic periods. If the portal is unresponsive, wait and try again later — or try off-peak hours like early morning or late evening. NTSA support: 0709 932 300.

Frequently Asked Questions — NTSA eLogbook Kenya

When does the NTSA eLogbook launch in Kenya?

June 10, 2026. From that date, NTSA will no longer issue physical logbooks for any motor vehicle transaction — new registrations, transfers, change of particulars, or any other service. All documents will be issued digitally as eLogbooks through the eCitizen TIMS platform.

How do I get my NTSA eLogbook?

Log in to your eCitizen account at ntsa.ecitizen.go.ke. Click on the NTSA service tile, then select New NTSA Portal. From the TIMS dashboard, click Motor Vehicle → View. Select your vehicle’s registration number. Click Download eLogbook or Print Certificate to save your digital logbook as a PDF. The download is completely free.

Is the eLogbook free to access and download?

Yes — completely free. Accessing and downloading your eLogbook from eCitizen costs nothing. Additionally, the Ksh 2,600 replacement fee that used to apply when a physical logbook was lost is gone entirely. You can download your eLogbook as many times as you need, forever, at no charge.

Do I need to apply for an eLogbook separately?

No. If your vehicle is already registered under your National ID on the NTSA TIMS system, your eLogbook will be accessible through your existing eCitizen account from June 10. You do not need to make a separate application or payment. If your vehicle does not appear in your TIMS account, there may be a registration mismatch that needs to be resolved with NTSA.

What if I don’t have an eCitizen account?

You will need to create one before you can access your eLogbook. Go to ecitizen.go.ke and register using your National ID number, an active phone number, and an email address. The registration takes about 5 minutes. An OTP will be sent to your phone to verify the account. If you need help setting up your eCitizen account, WhatsApp us on 0751947700 — we assist with this for Ksh 200.

Can I show my eLogbook on my phone at a police checkpoint?

Yes. From June 10, you can show your eLogbook on your smartphone screen at any police checkpoint. Law enforcement can also verify your vehicle’s ownership, inspection status, insurance validity, and compliance status in real time by scanning the QR code on your eLogbook — they do not need you to show a printed document.

What does the QR code on the eLogbook do?

The QR code embedded in every eLogbook connects directly to the NTSA live database. Any party who scans it — a buyer, police officer, bank, insurer, or inspection officer — can instantly see: the current registered owner, chassis and engine numbers, full vehicle inspection history, insurance validity, whether there are any active loans or SACCO charges against the vehicle, and whether the vehicle has been reported stolen. The data comes directly from NTSA’s system and cannot be faked or altered.

How do vehicle transfers work with the eLogbook?

Both the buyer and seller initiate the transfer process through their individual eCitizen/NTSA TIMS accounts — entirely online, with no need to visit any NTSA office. The new owner’s details update in the system in real time once the transfer is processed. Transfer fees are still paid through eCitizen. Both parties must have active eCitizen accounts, and the vehicle must be free of outstanding fines and financial liens before a transfer can be processed.

What happens to my old physical logbook?

Your existing physical logbook does not immediately become invalid on June 10. However, NTSA will not issue any new physical logbooks from that date. The next time you conduct any NTSA transaction on your vehicle — a transfer, re-registration, or change of particulars — your record will migrate to the eLogbook system at that point. Keep your physical logbook safely until your vehicle has been migrated to the digital system.

I bought a second-hand car — how do I verify it with eLogbook?

Ask the seller to show you the QR code on their eLogbook. Scan it with your smartphone. The scan will show you the current registered owner (does it match the person selling?), whether there are any outstanding bank or SACCO loans on the vehicle, the chassis and engine numbers, and whether it has been reported stolen. If anything in the QR scan does not match what the seller is telling you, do not proceed with the purchase. This verification is free and takes under a minute.
