SHA Eligibility Check: What Your Result Actually Means

Quick answer: Go to eligibility.sha.go.ke, select your identification type, enter the number, and click Check. No login or PIN is needed. Below, we show exactly what each possible result looks like — covered, not covered, no account at all, or an account that was never fully set up — line by line, so you know exactly what you’re looking at.

Every other guide to this tool stops at “go to the website and enter your ID.” None of them show you what actually comes back. This guide walks through the real result screens for every situation — a single person, a full family with dependants, someone with no SHA account, and someone whose account exists but was never finished — using example data so you know exactly what to look for on your own result.

The 9 identification types the checker accepts

Most guides only mention National ID. The portal actually accepts nine different identification types, so use whichever one matches your situation:

  • ID NumberKenyan national ID — most Kenyan adults
  • Alien IDAlien/foreigner registration card
  • Refugee IDRefugee identification document
  • Temporary IDTemporary identification document
  • Temporary Dependant IDTemporary dependant identification document
  • CR NumberCivil Registration number, where applicable
  • Passport NumberPassport
  • Household NumberSHA household registration number
  • Birth Certificate NumberBirth certificate, generally for children without an ID

How to run the check, step by step

1

Go to eligibility.sha.go.ke

Type the address directly rather than searching for it.

2

Select your identification type

Pick from the nine options above — whichever matches the document you’re searching with.

3

Enter the number and click Check

Your result appears immediately on the same page.

What the result actually looks like

This is the part nobody else shows you. Here is what each real scenario produces, with the names and numbers changed but the format kept exactly as it appears on the portal.

Scenario 1 — a single, fully registered person

One primary member, no dependants added. Two coverage lines appear — one for each fund.

✓ Covered
UHC
Covered until: 2034-09-30
D************A PRIMARY

The individual is covered.

Policy No: UHC-J3D9W***

Policy End Date: 2034-09-30

✓ Covered
SHIF
Covered until: 2026-10-10
D************A PRIMARY

The individual is covered.

Policy No: SHIF-GIMDR***

Policy End Date: 2026-10-01

Scenario 2 — a primary member with a spouse and children added

One card appears per person, per fund. A household of three (primary plus two dependants) can show up to six cards.

✓ Covered
UHC

M**************E PRIMARY

The individual is covered.

Policy No: UHC-Q7RT***

Policy End Date: 2034-09-30

CR419******7203-2 CR Number

Policy No: SHIF-BXQ2***

Policy End Date: 2027-01-05

Note: Dependant cards show a masked ID number and CR number alongside the beneficiary’s name, in addition to the policy details. Primary member cards do not show these extra lines.

Scenario 3 — no SHA account found

This is what appears when the ID number entered has no matching SHA record at all.

No records found for the identification details provided.

Scenario 4 — registered, but setup was never completed

An SHA account exists, but only one coverage line appears instead of two — a strong sign that registration was started but not finished.

✓ Covered
UHC
Covered until: 2034-09-30
P**************I PRIMARY

The individual is covered.

Policy No: UHC-T8LM***

Policy End Date: 2034-09-30

What this usually means: Based on real checks run through this tool, a result showing only a UHC line with no matching SHIF line is a pattern seen on accounts that were registered but never fully completed. If this is your result, log in at afyayangu.go.ke and check whether your means test or registration steps are still pending.

What to do based on your result

Covered on both UHC and SHIF

Your account is fully active. No action needed.

Only UHC showing

Registration is likely incomplete — finish it on the member portal.
Log in to Afya Yangu

No records found

No SHA account exists for that ID — you need to register.
Start SHA registration

Dependant not showing

A spouse or child not appearing means they were not added, or the addition is still pending.

FAQ: SHA Eligibility Check

What is the SHA eligibility check portal?

eligibility.sha.go.ke is the official tool for checking SHA coverage status. It requires only an identification number and returns a result immediately, with no login or PIN needed.

What ID types can I use to check SHA eligibility?

Nine identification types are accepted: ID Number, Alien ID, Refugee ID, Temporary ID, Temporary Dependant ID, CR Number, Passport Number, Household Number, and Birth Certificate Number.

What does it mean if my SHA eligibility check shows no records?

It means there is no SHA account matching the identification number entered — usually because the person has not registered, or the wrong ID number or ID type was used.

Why does my SHA eligibility result only show UHC and not SHIF?

This pattern generally appears when an SHA account exists but registration was not fully completed, so only one coverage line is showing instead of both.

What is the difference between PRIMARY and BENEFICIARY on my result?

PRIMARY is the main account holder who registered for SHA. BENEFICIARY is a dependant, such as a spouse or child, registered under the primary member’s account.
